A small rectangular wood red lacquer box (part a) with a fitted lid (part b). Black lacquer under the base, and inside. The sides of the box (part a), and lid (part b) are flush when closed with both having a continuous fret pattern around the sides. The top of the lid (part b) is carved with a scene of an old man, and a boy with trees, and rocks with an overall incised background patterning of rectangles on the sky, and hexagons on the ground.

SnowshoesN2.191 a-b

Pair of snowshoes, each made of two light brown wood sticks, stripped of bark and bent into a U-shape. The two U's are bound together facing each other, the ends overlapping and forming an ellipse. The binding is composed of four strips of light yellow wood, steam-bent and knotted, one around each end of each U, and two kinds of plant fibre cord, one used as lashing across centre of ellipse and the other loosely tied around the former. Between the overlapping ends of the U's are wood wedges.

Bamboo staff with a carved wood top (part a) and base (part b). The top (part a) is removable and carved to a point, underneath which, there are eleven carved rings with the first, fourth, and seventh being quite elaborated. The top fits into the shaft with an uncarved cylindrical tang. Top third of the bamboo (part b) is plain with two woven bamboo rings. The bottom third is decorated in sixteen rings of geometric and floral representations in reddish brown. Base is carved and painted in white. String is at the bottom of the shaft, by the base.

Rod PuppetIb319

A three-dimensional male humanoid figure puppet. Has a large head and jointed arms attached to controlling rods. The pink face is positioned forward with small eyes, a large wedge-shaped nose, red lips with prominent white upper teeth, and facial details in black. The hair is attached to the chin to form a goatee-like beard. Has a large hairnet with jamang and diadem in black, gold, with red, blue, and white detail. The hands are pink. The hand to the right is held flat and bending back at the wrist while the hand to the left is with the fingers touching the thumb. Wearing a blue robe-like upper garment with white trim, and a green, orange, and brown rough (batik ?) skirt.

Flat fan, ellipse shaped in outline, with frame of very fine split bamboo. Both sides covered with white paper with sparkly white whorl pattern, edges bound with silver paper. One side painted with two dragon flies in black and grey. Straight bamboo handle, natural colour.

Pot (part b) with carved dark brown wood figure (part a) on top. Figure (part a) is sitting with his hands on his knees and with a dried and cracked encrustation over the upward pointing, dark brown hair on the head. Hair is bound with string to form a tuff on top of the head. Base of the figure fits into the pot. Clay ginger pot (part b) of Chinese origin with a six-sided base, and a circular top covered on the outside with a string in woven pattern. There is an encrustment over the string. String handle on pot which looks fragile but is in good condition.

A carved wooden crocodile head. Two large eyes with incised outer rims and the nose on top of the head. Ten teeth are carved along the figure's right jaw while the left jaw has two lines incised to mark the jaw, but has no teeth. The lower jaw extends to two horn-like protuberances with a deep ridge under the head. Eye screw behind the head. 'New Guinea' is marked on the back in black crayon.

Scabbard (b) of two pieces of wood held together by raffia and cotton braided rope with four tassels. Brown upper border with raised square halfway where it is held in place by circular centre of four petal design. Brown curved border with linear design decoration.

Fertility figure (akuaba) with a female armless and legless torso with a flat disk-like head which has a high elongated oval forehead, curved upraised brows that are accentuated with grooves, raised eyes, eyebrows, nose, and lips. Ears have metal earrings with red plastic beads. Elongated neck with four bands. The torso shows carved breasts and a navel.
