It is covered in dark grey-green lacquer with red lacquer on the top surface and inner surfaces of the arms as well as the sides of the stopper.

Six twisted bamboo bands secure the staves, two near the top and four at the bottom. The top (c) has a stopper (b) that fits into a hole near the edge. Stained reddish-brown with black painted Japanese characters on the outside of each arm. Painted with a red band across the top. The base (d) is loose in the container.
