Tray3042/1

Rectangular wooden tray with short side walls, attached to its base by screws. Walls are straight on the outside and sloped on the interior toward the tray base. The interior base of the tray is decorated with a central incised image of a whale inside a circle, with minimal decoration in blue, black and red. To each side of the circle are similar smaller whales, four in total. The interior side walls of the tray have stylized images of painted whale eyes and fins. Rounded handles are attached to each end wall with screws. On the bottom of the tray is written in red ink, “Carved by Charles Gladstone Skidegate Mission BC 1949”

Lantern Slide3000/63 a-c

Double slipper lantern slide. A rectangular wooden frame holds three glass plates side by side. The centre plate is stationary and shows a coloured, printed image of two boys (in four figures) hopping over the other. The boys are vibrantly coloured in yellow, green, red and pink. The background is black. Parts b and c are panes of glass with blotches of black paint carefully placed to intermittently hide elements on the centre slide as they move past it. The frame is built to accommodate the moving slides, having large grooves in each side for the plates to move into, and semi-circular finger holes at the edges.

Lantern Slide3000/62 a-b

Single slipper lantern slide. A rectangular wooden frame holds two glass plates side by side, one stationary and the other moveable (part b). The stationary plate shows a vibrantly coloured, printed image of a barber dressed in yellow, red and white, standing close beside a large man with a frothy beard, in white and blue. The background is black. Part b is printed at top centre with the yellow-sleeved arm of the barber holding a razor. When the pane slides back and forth, it appears that the barber is shaving the customer’s beard. The frame is built to accommodate the moving slide, having a large groove in the end of one side for the plate to move into, and a semi-circular finger hole at the edge. Written on label: "easy shaving one penny"

Lantern Slide3000/61 a-c

Single slipper lantern slide. A long, rectangular wooden frame holds two glass plates side by side, one stationary (part b) and the other moveable (part c). The plate that would be stationary (now loose) has a circular image at centre showing a vibrantly coloured, printed scene of a city with grand architecture in the rear-ground, and a river with a sturdy brick bridge in the mid-ground. The area around the image is black. Part c is a similarly sized, moveable pane of glass printed at bottom centre with a variety of small black boats and at middle with a train puffing smoke. When the pane is moved back and forth, it places the train on the bridge and moves the boats into view on the river. Stamped in wood: "Newton / 5 Fleet St / Temple.Bar / London"

Single slipper lantern slide. A long, rectangular wooden frame holds two glass plates side by side, one stationary and the other moveable (part b). The stationary plate has a circular image at centre showing a vibrantly coloured, printed scene of a pink and blue sky with white clouds behind a brown mountain that edges a blue green sea with gentle waves. A small town sits at the base of the mountain. Part b is a similarly sized moveable pane of glass printed at centre with three multi-masted black boats. When the pane is moved back and forth, the boats appear to travel across the water. Inscription: "Bay of Hatales". Stamped in wood: "Newton / 5 Fleet St / Temple. Bar / London".

Single slipper lantern slide. A rectangular wooden frame holds two glass plates side by side, one stationary and the other moveable. The stationary plate shows a vibrantly coloured, printed image of a girl in a red dress offering food to a large swan floating in a lake, as well as a second figure of the girl being tossed in the air and devoured by the bird. The background is black. The moveable plate has two carefully placed blotches of black ink that when moved hides or reveals the images of the girl. The frame is built to accommodate the moving slide, having a large groove in the end of one side for the plate to move into, and a semi-circular finger hole at the edge.

Single slipper lantern slide. A rectangular wooden frame holds a single, stationary glass plates (a moveable plate of similar size that would normally be part of this type of object is missing). The stationary plate shows a vibrantly coloured, printed image of a man dressed in blue, red and white with his foot on a small stool, one hand gripping his heel, and the opposite arm shown in two positions: one raised, the other falling, and holding an axe aimed at the foot. The frame has accommodations for a moving slide, with a large groove in the end of one side for the plate to move into, and a semi-circular finger hole at the edge. Inscription: "T. Pamphlet".
