Drum3383/13

Wood drum with reptile skin. The drum tapers in from the top, and has a cylindrical base. The sides are painted with black and off-white vertical stripes. The skin is secured by two rows of wood pegs, and a notched leather band that wraps around it. One side has two raised areas, one with a metal ring, and the other wire, looped through.

Bowl3383/9

Long narrow bowl with a carved figures at each end. Extending from each end is a carved human head wearing an oval ring headdress with a small sphere inside. Each face is elongated, has a nose ornament and large ears on the sides. The bowl itself is the body for each figure, with their hands and feet along the rim. The exterior is carved with concentric ring designs. The bowl is painted white except for a red band underneath one head, and the carved loops at each end which are brown on the outer edge, and deep red within.

Shield3383/8

Shield with designs carved in low relief on the concave front. The body has abstract mirrored M-shaped designs in orange-red, outlined in black, with off-white in the negative space. The top of the shield has two large round white eyes, outlined in black with black pupils and a vertical ridge extending down between them. Back is plain with a large vertical carved handle. A loop of plant fibre is tied to the handle with a Jayapura Airport (DJJ) Merpati airlines luggage tag attached.

Chilkat Pattern Board3379/1

Painted wooded pattern board for weaving a Chilkat style robe. The panel is somewhat rectangular except for the bottom right corner which is cut off at an angle. There is a rectangular human-like face at the centre front, above which is an eye form containing a frog face. Below the rectangular form are two inverted eye forms, to the right of which is a foot with claws. Above, are two more eye forms. At the midpoint of the side edge is a rectangular profile human-like face looking inwards towards the centre. Back is undecorated.

Drumstick3376/4

Drumstick(?). Wooden carved stick with a rounded face at one end. The face tapers to a rounded nose, and has a notch between the brows. Behind the head is a scooped out area, like the bowl of a spoon. The face has round black eyes, two large nostrils, and a wide open red mouth. There is also a section of red and then black down the curved portion of the handle, which is flat and angular on the opposite side. There is a fine line etched around the base of the handle, and halfway around the knot in the wood.
