Mask3698/15

Oblong wooden mask with a broad, flat face; decorative arch protrudes from sides, overtop head. Arch is rectangular, with an oval-like cutout between bottom edge and top of head. Small faces carved in relief in top corners of arch; bottom corners are pointed tips, that flare out from body of mask. Edges of arch have ridges carved into them. Triangles and diamonds incised around edges of cut out on arch; wavy lines incised on forehead, beneath arch. Face has circular eyes, semi-circular eyebrows, rectangular nose, and oval-shaped mouth with two teeth; cut outs for eyes and mouth. Circular ears carved in relief on either side of face. Metal hooks attached to sides, on back of mask, for hanging. Sticker label, with culture and place made, attached to back.

Mask3698/14

Round wooden face mask, with crown carved in relief across forehead. Crown has three-prongs protruding from the curved band. Bottom edges of prongs have zigzags carved across them; upper portion of prongs decorated with concentric triangles. Crown's band covered with alternating concentric triangle designs; all motifs are incised. Face has inset circular eyes, long thin nose with wide nostrils, and a smiling mouth with five teeth. Cut outs for eyes and mouth; circular ears carved in relief on either side of face, underneath crown. Metal hooks attached to sides, on back of mask, for hanging.

Doll3663/2

Male doll, in a standing position, with a walking stick and wood carrier on back; made of brown-grey fabric. Main body of male is stuffed; arms and legs have stiff material inside. Eyes, eyebrows, mouth, and moustache are embroidered; nose done in relief. Male is wearing a long, white head covering and wide-brimmed plant fibre hat overtop; brim decorated with a green stripe. Doll is wearing a long-sleeved shirt, with a yellow body and blue sleeves; groupings of plain and checkered stripes along sleeves. Has a red plaid neck scarf, and wide plaid belt wrapped around his waist. Wearing ankle-length orange and white striped pants. Carrier is stitched to doll's shoulders, and made of a nailed wood frame; sides wrapped in plant fibre ties. Stiff plant bundles inside carrier, and strapped to side; fibrous plant bundle tied to opposite side. Patterned blanket tied to top of carrier. Doll is barefoot, and nailed to a square wood base. Unsigned.

Female doll, in standing position, with a baby on their back; made of brown-grey fabric. Main body of woman and baby are stuffed; arms and legs have stiff material inside. Eyes, eyebrows, and mouth are embroidered; nose done in relief. Dark hair is held back with a twisted headband, large knot at front; shallow, plant fibre basket balanced on top of head, with pieces of patterned fabric inside. Cloth is white and yellow, and she has a long piece of similar fabric draped over her right arm. Doll is wearing a short-sleeved shirt; design of plain and checkered horizontal stripes on front and sleeves. Back of shirt has additional band with checkered rhombuses inside it. Wide belt wrapped around waist, with groups of vertical stripes on front; back also has wide columns of rhombuses. Ankle-length skirt is plaid. All clothing and accessories are orange, green, black, blue, and white. Baby on back is wrapped in a white sling, wearing a red, plaid cap; eyes and mouth are embroidered. Doll is barefoot, and nailed to a square wood base. Unsigned.

Portrait of the Artist's Aunt3684/2

Wooden portrait mask, with long dark hair. Front surface almost completely painted in red, green and black designs; mouth slightly open showing a row of operculum shell teeth; two curved copper bands nailed on as eyebrows; four cut feathers at the top of forehead, with the ends of the quills projecting down through holes to the inside of the mask. The inside of the mask is plain wood, with a horizontal wooden mouth piece attached. Edge of hair pieces inserted in a cut opening along the full length of each side.

The man on the left holds a sceptre and the man on the right holds a cross-bearing orb. Mary holds her hands together in front of her, above a red Ankh. All four figures have halos. Painted on canvas, in a carved wooden frame with a metal hook at the top back.

Drum3677/11

Heavy, tall wooden drum. Somewhat hourglass-shaped, with a smaller lower section. Skin stretched over the wider end, held by leather strip nailed around edge. The side has vertical lines of twisted animal skin with cowrie shells attached uniformly, which attaches to a metal ring. Hollow wooden base, which has lightly marked lines around the sides and circular marks with holes in the centre that follow the lines. Twisted fibre loop sits loose around the foot. Twisted fibre handle attached to one side.

Carved stone standing female figure. The head is large and oblong-shaped front to back, with carved rows of hair, ears, almond-shaped eyes, a wide nose, and prominent lips. They have a short, wide neck and a short torso with prominent breasts, back and buttocks. The slightly bent arms are down with hands at the side. The attached legs are bent at the knees. The figure stands on a mound-like base, which doubles as feet.
