Mask3137/3

Mask made of carved wood, animal skin and cloth. The face is painted dark red, and displays an open mouth, small nose, eye holes bored through the wood, and small rounded ears to the sides. Small tufts of hair sit under the nose for a mustache. Feathers are attached to the top of the head, mimicking hair, with hide on the sides. A thick thatch of matted grass is attached to a dark brown flap of cotton that covers the wearer’s head at back.

Mask3137/2

Mask made of carved wood, animal skin and cloth. The face is painted a shiny black, and displays an open mouth, protruding nose, and eye holes bored through the wood. Large ears are carved at sides. Strands of hair are glued to the upper lip for a mustache, and pieces of hide are used for eyebrows. Paper is attached inside the mouth with ink lines drawn for teeth. Paper is also set inside the eyes with small tears that allow the wearer to see. The paper has writing in blue ink on the interior. A blue headband sits across the forehead. Large flaps of skin are attached around the face and used as a head cover for the wearer.

Mask3137/1

Mask made of carved wood, animal skin and cloth. The mask is painted black, and displays an open mouth with white paper behind the lips, blue pen used to draw teeth. Above a small protruding nose are bored eye holes also with inserted white paper, torn to indicate a pupil. Large ears are carved at sides. A series of wrinkles are carved into the forehead and along the cheeks. Pieces of hide with long strands of light brown hair are glued to the upper lip and chin for a mustache and beard, as well as around they eyes and to the top of the head for hair. Burlap covered in goat hair and matted grass covers the back of the wearer’s head.

Veil3132/2 c

Veil, or shawl, worn with wedding ensemble (3132/2 a-b). Fabric is wild tussar silk in a light orange-brown colour. It is hand embroidered with small images of standing birds, elephants with tusks and long tails, and human figures with arms spread, in gold metallic thread, round wooden beads, and tubular glass and metal beads. The back of the veil shows the yellow and white thread used to attach the beads.

Garment3132/2 a

Long tunic (kameez) worn over pants with a veil, as part of a wedding ensemble (3132/2 b-c). Shirt has long narrow sleeves, a slightly scooped neck, and a front opening that fastens with hooks. Garment is made of wild tussar silk in a light orange-brown colour. It is hand embroidered the length of the front opening on both sides, and around the wrists and front of the neck, along with cording of metallic thread. Images include standing birds, elephants with tusks and long tails, and human figures with arms spread, in gold metallic thread, round wooden beads, and tubular glass and metal beads. The back is undecorated; the interior is lined with panels of silk in a course weave.

Oval head with angular back is plain with moulded eyes set on opposing sides and open mouth carved with square teeth. Tall intricate headdress constructed from a thick main bar decorated with 2 tall half crescents and 2 short curved bands hanging below. 3 round bolts protrude from the front and back of the main bar.

Maiden Spirit Mask3055/11

Mmwo helmet mask. Carved from a single piece of wood, the mask depicts a female face with a large ornate coiffure. Light brown fabric is sewn on around the edges. The face is painted white, framed with brown. Finely carved protruding features: eyes are narrow slits, ears have round holes, raised eyebrows, three lines on forehead. A small brown pinwheel is carved on each cheek. Headdress is intricately carved and elaborately constructed. Side pieces hang down over ears in a V shape. A raised glass disk sits in the opening of each V. Four connected arches run from forehead to back of head supported by a large white wedge to either side. The middle arch is decorated with a series of raised, hollow rings alternately painted blue, white, tan, and brown. Inner side arches painted blue along tops.

Maiden Spirit Mask3055/10

Mmwo helmet mask. Carved from a single piece of wood, the mask depicts a female face with an ornate coiffure. Face is cream coloured, with patches of pink. Black outlines surround protruding ears, narrow rectangular eye holes and open mouth with square teeth. Face is decorated with 2 black bands on forehead, 4 in front of each ear and a raised curved line on each cheek. A short black line runs from lower lip to chin. Small holes ring base of mask. Intricate black headdress carved with lines and circles. 5 rounded twists protrude on each side of head. A thin curved board extends from forehead to middle of scalp with 6 rounded triangles atop rectangular pedestals. Forehead is carved with vertical lines.
