Wrap Skirt1473/11

Rectangular, ceremonial skirt, or apron. The main body of the piece is made of black cotton textile which is bordered on the right-hand side with a narrow multicoloured, patterned stripe. Small floral-like motifs made of cowrie shells are spaced across the width of the apron. The lower third of the garment consists of a finely-woven, horizontally striped, multicoloured textile, with many woven geometric motifs. Many long strands of dark red glass and metallic cylindrical beads, interspersed with white seeds, are attached just above this patterned textile and hang freely to the bottom of the garment. Each strand of beads is finished with a tuft of wool, resembling a small tassel.

Each strand of beads is finished with a tuft of wool, resembling a small tassel.

A horizontal row of closely-spaced cowrie shells is affixed to the apron just above this patterned textile and extends almost all the way across the width of the garment, and below it is a parallel row of Jacob’s tears seeds. Many long strands of dark red and blue glass beads and metallic cylindrical beads, interspersed with Jacob’s tears seeds, are attached below these rows of shells and seeds and hang freely to the bottom of the garment. Each strand of beads is finished with a tuft of wool, resembling a small tassel.

Headdress680/2

A tall dark brown and brown mottled feather headdress with a beadwork head band. The bottom ends of the feathers are wrapped with red fabric and green yarn and attached to the beadwork head band with brown leather. The beadwork head band has a background of white rectangles each with a design in either brown, green, or pink. Brass metal circles are attached at either sides with long orange, green, and red, and pink ribbons. There are some more feathers attached to the head band.

Light tan reindeer fur woman's boots made with pointed, upturned toes. Trimmed with red and yellow wool felt. Four sets of brass eyelets laced at the ankle with twisted red and yellow fibre cord. Small black wool vest with silver embroidery. The vest has a centre front opening with lower edges that curve upwards. There are dense swirling patterns made of silver metallic braid and thread that has been couched onto the surface of the ground fabric. Blue and green glass beads are incorporated into some of the patterns. All edges are bordered with flat silver braid. The centre opening and bottom edge have small spherical ornaments, made of wood or fibre and been wrapped with silver thread. The inner lining is black silky fabric.

Wedding Scarf1330/9

Man’s long, narrow, rectangular scarf or sash, heavily embroidered with multicoloured geometric and floral motifs and many mirrors. Arranged along the length of the scarf are sixteen square and rectangular blocks of embroidered designs, consisting of a variety of motifs, many different kinds of stitches and two styles of embroidery (kharek and pakka). The embroidery is so dense that it completely covers the background textile. The blocks of embroidery are separated by black “braid” formed from bundles of black cotton thread which is laid and couched with red thread. There is a border of silver and gold mirrors along all four edges, and the ends are embellished with green and pink beadwork and small red-orange silk tassels. A binding of dark green cotton muslin is machine-stitched along the outside edges. The underlining is pieced from plain and printed cotton and rayon(?) textile in various shades of red.
