Breastplate3357/4

Diamond-shaped breastplate painted with gold. Cross-shaped metalwork at centre, with five inset polished oval reddish-brown carnelian(?) stones, one at each end of the cross and one at the centre. Around the cross is a diamond-shaped band composed of small plaited chains of metal, then a row of small inset polished circular reddish-brown stones, and then a band around the outer edge of two plaited chains with a snaking line between. At the top is a small hooked attachment. Top edges decorated with attached triangular clover-shaped metal pieces. Bottom edge has a fringe of chains with diamond-shaped ornaments at the end. There are eight tassels, one on each side with two more hanging from long plaited fibres, and two more near the bottom edge. Each tassel composed of a metal cap, from which diamond ornaments hang from S-hooks around the edge, and dark green, dark pink, or dark eggplant purple fibre hangs from underneath with small white beads at the end.

Coast Salish Potlatch Dress3339/1

Tunic-style dress made of woven cedar bark, with full-length wool panel down the centre front. Wool woven around cedar bark in horizontal rows throughout dress. Cedar bark and dark brown wool fringe along bottom edge. Dark brown wool fringe down entire left and right sides of dress. Wool panel on front has white background with mirrored chevron pattern. Small teal diamond in middle of pattern with alternating light blue, dark blue, brown and teal V shapes, on either side of diamond, until top and bottom ends of panel. Inner V’s made up of coloured triangles. Outer three V’s are solid teal, light blue and dark blue. Top and bottom edges of panel are dark brown. White wool fringe along top and bottom edges of panel, top fringe hangs inside of dress. Interior lined with dark brown wool.

Blanket3356/1

Weaving with a background of natural off-white wool. The design features a box created by a black and off-white checkerboard pattern with some brown-yellow within. This box is bordered by brown-red checkerboard with two black lines across the top, and three black lines across the bottom. Within the box, a series of horizontal bands with triangles and zigzags. Between the bands is a grid of four by four small sections of bold zigzag designs with small natural off-white sections in between (three by three). The loops along the top of the blanket are shorter than those along the bottom.

Boots3305/2 a-b

Pair of men’s calf length boots with slits along upper back. Calf portion of boots made of maroon silk with vine-like designs and characters embroidered throughout. Back slits and top edges of boots trimmed with dark blue, black and yellow plaid fabric. Red silk band around ankles with flowers and feathers embroidered in black and gold. Red silk extends upwards along front and back seams. These sections have characters and flowers embroidered in gold and light blue. Front red silk seam has gold and blue stripes down centre. Back red silk seam has orange stripe down centre. All red silk sections trimmed with yellow and blue stripes. Foot portion of boots covered with white material and have dark brown leather(?) appliques around heels and toes. Dark green and white fabric layers between boot and black leather(?) soles. Boot interiors have dark red-purple lining.

Headdress3332/28

Headdress composed of a wide band and a long train. The band is decorated with two rows of cowrie shells, which are divided by rows of small red beads. Bottom edge bordered with colourful embroidery. A long train extends down from the band. At top, within beaded ovals are cowrie shells in four-sided designs. Rows of buttons, small brass bells, and circular metal discs, and vertical strings of beads alternating yellow and red or white and red. The train ends with long, dark brown woolen fringe.

Gun Holder3332/13

Two pieces of fabric, sewn together on two sides with short edge open. The textile has a wide end, which is open, and tapers in to a narrow end. One side is straight, the other curved. Heavily embroidered with beaded work along the edges. Gold fibre applique around edges and following shape within textile. Green glass button with mirror on small dark red pompom at top centre, with short beaded strap extending up from.

Skull cap with S-shaped or dollar sign designs in needlepoint, all around the outer fabric. Each dollar sign outlined in gold-coloured metallic thread. Composed from a wide headband and topped with a low circular dome piece. Interior lined with a pinkish-brown with beige patterned fabric.

Devil Costume3289/2

Green, navy, yellow and cream plaid wool devil costume with ribbons attached. Full-body costume, with bottom section sewn into long pant legs, and an open top. Short fringe on pant cuffs and along top of garment. Five long ribbons are safety-pinned to the front - royal blue, yellow, light blue and navy, and one small ribbon, which reads 'Jesus Nazareno Abril 2006' with an image of Jesus. The back of the top portion of the garment is not sewn down the centre. The left pant cuff has a white synthetic rope drawn through the weave.

Hand puppet of character named Madelon. Head and hands are carved from wood and painted. She has black eyes and eyebrows, red lips, nostrils and inner corners of the eyes, and rosy cheeks. Her head is wrapped in a red fabric, with black hair at the front. Her fabric body is beige with an orange collar. The fabric is nailed to the hands and head. Operated by inserting a hand inside the body of the puppet to control its head and movements.
