Headband3034/2

Woolen sash constructed of three parts. The centre portion is a long panel of woven wool, the warp white, weft black, creating a small diamond pattern. At each end the warp becomes a thinner multi-strand plait, fastened at ends with a piece of black wool. Braid culminates in a loose tassel.

Bag2981/9

Square bag knit with wool in a tight weave. The body of the bag is red with several vertical lines of blue and white. At the bottom corners are two tassels of red, blue and white wool. A fringe of the same decorates the front top opening of the bag. At the top corners is attached a short handle also knit and decorated like the body of the bag. Bits of feathers are caught in the bag’s weave.

Small woven basketry bag decorated with pink, yellow, and green wool bunches held together with string, beads and small white shells. Diamond shaped design in red and green fibre are woven into the body of the bag. An intermittent fringe of wool hangs from the bottom of the bag along with strands of grass. The shoulder strap consists of 5 twisted strands of grass attached in a knot with red and green wool.

String Puppet2956/296

String puppet (marioneta) representing the character O Infante Don Henrique (Prince Henry the Navigator, 1394-1460), King of Portugal, dressed in a black felt hat with wide brim and long trailing portion, a long black tunic and a long heavy felt coat with silver buttons, tied at the waist with a black rope. Cuffs are decorated with long lines of small black buttons, while front is closed with large dark silver buttons. Boots are short and pointed. Hands and face are delicately carved and very detailed. The face is lined with wrinkles on cheeks and forehead, a large thick nose protrudes, mouth is pink and slightly open, eyes are painted brown under grey brows. Black hair peeks out from under the hat. Puppet is moved by a wooden control stick, with marionette strings attached to head, shoulders, hands and knees.

String Puppet2956/295 a-b

String puppet (marioneta) of the character Vasco da Gama. He is richly dressed, with pants and tunic of brocade covered by a knee length cloak of blue velvet edged in fur and a matching hat. His boots are tall, folding over at the knee. A wide, braided belt of leather holds a sheathed wooden sword (part b) painted silver and gold. His face is bearded, and eyes are shiny silver plastic. Hands and face are delicately carved and very detailed. Puppet is moved by a wooden control stick, with marionette strings attached to head, shoulders, hands and knees.

Long, thin woven rag rug. The warp is made of a thick, soft rope-like fibre and burlap that terminate at each end in loops. The weft is made of thick wool, woven in regularly spaced lines of red and black, white and black, red and blue, and red and brown. At each end is a wide stripe of red, yellow and tan.

Beaded headband. Red, square-headed beaded figures embellished with grey, orange and green details are joined on a white background. In the centre is a line and diamond pattern in dark blue and orange. The border is dark blue and yellow. Part b is a round beaded medallion with a white background, red and green bead edging, and a red and green circular centre portion. The beads are sewn onto a felt backing.

Doll2998/12

A small, stuffed cotton doll, clothed in a white, long-sleeved shirt, with attached full length skirt. The shirt has a pink and blue wool stitched design on the front, and purple cotton stitching around the sleeves. Pink cotton stitching runs up the back. The skirt features a vertical stripe design, of black, blue, purple, red, orange, yellow and green stripes, and is hemmed with white lace. The face features two dark brown circular eyes, a pale pink triangular shaped nose, and a red mouth, all of which are of another material, perhaps felt, that has been adhered to the cotton face. The doll has black wool for hair, styled in two braids, interwoven and tied off with pink and green ribbons. The doll has two buttons sewn on at either side of the hip under the skirt, a dark brown one on the proper right, and a smaller white one on the proper left.

Square woven top with fringed bottom edge and a vertical slit for neck opening at the top. Neck opening is lined with orange fabric. Top is one piece, folded over to create two panels. There are eight tassels, four on each side, tying the closed sides. Tassels are multi-coloured and fringe at the bottom is pink. Edges are stitched in a multi-coloured design. There are 3 lines along the bottom, 2 pink and a brown one in the middle.
