Suspension HookIe418

Carved wooden hook consisting of a male figure with a large, long, oval shaped head with a long nose and a slightly protruding tongue. The face has two fibre tufts on either side and is detailed with blue, white and red pigment painted in an abstract design. There is an elongated, semi-circular woven fibre handle at the top. The body consists of two arm-like structures painted red and blue that point outwards at the ‘elbow’ then taper in, creating a diamond shape. The base has a crescent shaped piece of wood with a central rectangular shape that joins to the body.

Body MaskIe415

Tumbuan 'mask' or body costume. Conical shape made of a wooden frame and wrapped with a large piece of mulberry bark that is painted with a vertical striped pattern in dark brown, light brown and orange. Along the bottom edge is a long fringe of sennit(?) dyed red and black; the sides have two red tufts. Attached to the front is an oval shaped wooden mask covered in white clay. The face has a long forehead, protruding brow, nose and red tongue. The septum has boar tusks running through; eyes are inlaid with shell. Around the eyes and nose is black and white spotted detailing. Above the mask are black feathers, a large tuft of sennit ? dyed black and painted red and white. The top back has a fibre woven plate, an erect woven handle and a pink and blue fabric decoration with white feathers. The top sides have wooden handles painted black, red and white.

Carved wood drum with an hour glass shape. The surface is detailed with a mirrored stylized design carved in relief. The rectangular carved handle has open scroll work with a cylindrical piece in the middle; attached are many grass ? tassels. Skin drum head bound with split, braided bamboo.

Suspension HookIe483

Carved wooden basket hook consisting of a female figure with a long oval shaped face and a conical-shaped headdress. The face has incised, tattoo-like detailing on the cheeks, a long nose, inlayed shell eyes and a slightly protruding tongue. The arms hang down to the knees which are slightly bent. The body is rounded; the genital area is exposed. The crescent shaped base has stylized incised band designs that are incorporated into a central face. Along the sides of the body is a rounded, triangular repeating design. The reverse is carved; the centre has a protruding crocodile up the back. The wood is stained black with a clay(?) dust coating.

Flute Stop FigureIe481

Flute stop representing a male figure with a black and white painted face and a cylindrical post underneath its feet. The figure is wearing a tooth necklace with a cassowary feather skirt and a cowrie shell waistband. The figure is also ornamented with a cowrie shell headband, a circular piece of shell on the forehead, shell earrings, and a segment of tusk inserted through the nose with a strip of woven cord hanging from it. The eyes are inlaid with iridescent shell.

Mask depicting a long and narrow human face with protruding eyes, a protruding tongue and a recurved nose with the head of a boar-like figure at the chin. The face is heavily encrusted with shells at the edges, and ornamented with black cassowary feathers at the sides. Tusks protrude from the nostrils and the cheeks as well as from the cheeks of the boar-like figure. Sennit fibre tassels are tied through holes along the protruding rod running from the forehead to below the mouth. A loop hanger is attached at the top.

Carved wood mask consisting of a head with an elongated brow; a long nose, mouth and chin. The top of the head is decorated with cassowary feathers and a small tuft of human hair. The face is elaborately detailed with dark blue, light blue and brown stylized designs on a white ground. There is a long, cylindrical shaped piece of wood that stretches from the bottom of the nose to the bottom of the mask; on the end is a small carved bird. The forehead and the side of the face are inlaid with rows of small shells; the eyes and sections of the forehead are detailed with inlaid cowrie shells. The nose has boar tusk on either side. The lower sides and bottom are lined with small bundles of sennit fibre. The bottom tip and the sides have bundles of black feathers.

Flute stop. Carved with an obal face with a handle extending from the bottom. Inlaid cowrie shell eyes are surrounded by a black tapering oval. Open black mouth with red lips and white teeth in a grin. Face is decorated with curvi-linear triangular lines painted red, black, and white. Cylindrical handle tapering at both ends. Handle is black with horizontal red and white bands at the top.
