CHIEFLY FEASTS: THE ENDURING KWAKIUTL POTLACH. JONAITIS, ALDONA EXHIBITION CATALOG, 1991 FROM THE LAND OF THE TOTEM POLES. JONAITIS, ALDONA, 1988
Tall, completely sculptured poles were almost entirely a development of the early twentieth century. Before that time most Kwakwaka'wakw totemic monuments were either interior house posts or single figures of birds, animals, and mythical beings perched on the house gables or on tall, plain masts. This carving of an eagle is of the latter kind. The outspread wings are separate attached pieces, as is characteristic of many large Kwakwaka'wakw sculputured figures. From the character of this painting and of the sculptural form, the piece can be attributed to Arthur Shaughnessy, a prominent carver and contemporary of artists Mungo Martin and Willie Seaweed. (Holm, Crooked Beak of Heaven, 1972)
The paint is red, blue, gray, and black.
Wooden, storage chest (parts a-b) with a brown wood frame bottom, metal side handles and a flat wood lie (part b). The box (part a) is painted on three sides with a white background and Northwest Coast stylized figures in black, green, grey and red. The front design depicts a front facing whale with its body split to either side, its dorsal fin on top and its tail fin at the bottom. The ends each have a whale in profile.
Mask with a scalloped edge, slightly raised eyes, a bird's beak as a nose, a mouth with slightly downturned corners, and two long, slightly tapering ears with rounded ends that protrude up from the top sides of the head. Above the head are a series of triangular pieces of wood arranged in a semicircle and attached together at the outside edge with a strip of leather. The wood pieces are controlled by strings at the outside corners that can be used to pull the triangles down to form rays around the outside edge of the mask. The mask is painted white with black details on the scalloped edge, red and black designs on the forehead, black eyebrows, green around the eyes and on the nose, red nostrils, black dashed lines, scallops, and a curvilinear line on each cheek, a black scalloped moustache and chin beard, and red lips. The triangles above the head are painted white with designs in red and black that form a uniform design when the triangles are closed to form their overall crescent shape.
