A bird with outstretched wings curving upward and inward. The head is in profile and facing to the right side with a black circle in circle eye surrounded by a tapering oval and a sideways red u form behind. The curved orange beak has a black ovoid nostril. The red mouth shows even rows of teeth. There is a sideways green u form and a black split u behind the mouth. There is a black inward curl below the chin. The six-feathered wings are connected by black u forms and a black circle in a circle at the end. The three innermost feathers have an orange, then a red, then a green u form with an orange oval at the end. The three outermost feathers have a green and then a red split u. There is a frontal face on the body. The black circle in circle eyes outlined by green are looking upward. The nose is an orange dot. The open mouth shows even rows of teeth outlined by red. The three-feathered tail each has a red and then a green u shape outlined by black. The red legs are at either sides with three digit orange claws that have black tips with a black circle in a circle at the centre. Pencil inscription along the bottom edge reads '19/23 AP KOLUS Beau Dick 91'. On a relatively square, white paper piece.
Ermine headdress attached to a wooden frontlet. Frontlet in painted in blue, red and black with a central figure of a humanoid face with protruding, hooked nose encircled by a red-lined ring of abalone. Two faces, one humanoid and mask-like, the other round and black with red lips, sit atop and below the main face. The eyes of all three faces are inlaid with abalone. The frontlet is attached to the front of a circular white fur cap, attached to a long train (90 cm) of white ermine pelts with brown tails sewn onto a length of white fabric backing. A vertical row of brown whiskers protrude from the cap directly behind the top of the frontlet.
Headdress with a frontlet of red painted wood inlaid around three edges with coppers and abalone. In the centre of frontlet is a human figure, elbows resting on knees with hands held up, palms outward; figure has inlaid abalone for eyes and teeth. Frontlet is attached to a white fur hat which, in turn, is attached to a long train (80 cm le) of off-white ermine skins, backed by red cotton. The ermine tails--the tips of which are dark brown--each have a red strip of cotton tied to them.
Bilaterally symmetrical image with frontal face flanked by profile faces connected by curved band; main lines in black, secondary features in orange-red and orange, tertiary features in brown. Central ovoid face, outlined in black with curled ear-shapes above, circle within circle eyes outlined with tapering ovoids, surrounded by orange. Orange-red mouth, even white teeth, tongue protrudes over centre bottom teeth. Unconnected hands below face on either side with double black ovoid palms and orange fingers and thumb. Curved bands are three thin parallel black bands with rows of u-shapes between, centre u's are reversed from top to bottom; top and bottom in alternating orange and brown; centre alternates in brown and orange-red. Profile faces have curled ear-shape; orange-red tongue protrudes from mouth with even teeth rows, canines are two triangles forming square. Eye as in central face; black nose curves up over central orange ovoid. Pencil inscription at bottom reads '77/200 sisiutl beau dick 81'.
Dzunuk’wa mask with black hair inserted into drilled holes along upper rim and at brow ridge and a dark grey-black face. The mask has red-rimmed eye holes, a small flattish nose, open pursed red lips, and four red oval depressions, one on each temple and on each cheek. On the reverse, a cord is looped and knotted through two drilled holes in the sides at eye level. Three holes for hair inserts are visible on the reverse, two near the top, and one on the side below the hole for the cord. Signed "Beau Dick 1983" on the interior.
Wooden, carved bird mask with a very long straight beak. Beak has rounded end and movable lower mandible. Shredded cedar bark at top of head has five feathers, three brown and two white, and down. Twisted cedar bark nailed along upper rim, sides and lower, unraveled ends on either side of elongated rounded protuberance at base of beak; long bent brow above orange eye area which is curved and pointed at base of beak, pointed eyelid lines have red optic liners, circular pupil; u forms on temples; conical protruding nostrils have circular ends and u forms along length; black beak has series of u forms above and below red lip band; lower mandible is slightly longer than upper beak. Frontal bird face at base of lower mandible with black and white circular pupils in orange eye areas, black broad nostril nose with circle at centre for tip of beak, white band around red continuous lip band, bared teeth. Lower mandible attached to base of head by leather hinges that have been glued and stapled into place; operated by cord tied and passed through 2 metal 'eyes' on interior of beak, looped around a wooden ball and attached to the centre of a short stick; nylon line looped and tied through two holes at base of head. Signed 'Hok Hok Beau Dick 80.'
Winalagalis hand puppet. Articulated male figure is somewhat skeletal, with leather joints at neck, hip, elbows, wrists and ankles; humanoid skulls at knee joints; pegged shoulder joints. Head: long strands of hair are inserted into holes drilled at top and back; green face has black brows, white brow line; slightly depressed eye area has white circular hole pupils in red; sharply curved nose has rounded red nostrils; white moustache-like area on red rounded upper lip, moveable lower jaw, quill teeth; circular red and black ears. Body: green ovoid with white crescent at pectorals, exposed ribs, red navel; hips are attached to rib cage with thread loops; penis on wooden extension is screwed to back of rib cage; scrotum on separate cords; rolled leather at top of each leg is inserted into hips; long wide feet have 2 sets of parallel lines indicating bones, green toenails; long arms, hands with green fingernails hang to knee level. Single strand of red beads around neck. The puppet's genitalia manipulates body movements through the use of cord and wire.
Wild man or Bukwus mask with three shades of green paint on a skeletal face, with red, white and black used to emphasize facial features. Red horsehair has been stapled to top rim and centre of dome-like forehead; on either side of forehead natural wood horn-like projections have been pegged and glued, projection on left is loose; black brows, outlined in white, graduate in size from bridge of nose to side orbital ridge; curvilinear design from brows to side rim; sunken eye areas with hollow eyes; hooked nose with hollow flaring nostrils; bulbous protrusion on each cheek; wide gaping mouth exposes buck-teeth of natural wood; black and white form line design extends from nostrils around mouth to chin; white line divides cheek and chin from jaw. On reverse, four leather strips pass through holes drilled at sides and top and artist signature. Small sliver of wood lifted from front at side on right; peg for horn-like protrusion on left visible on reverse.
Eagle transformation mask that has three beak portions joined by wedge-shaped pieces of wood fastened together by cloth and string; beak portions are pegged and hinged to an exterior wooden mount behind the interior human face mask; wood and string lever at base operates mask. Exterior closed: top of mask has three wedged shaped pieces painted white with black spots, down feathers glued to surface. Both upper beak portions identical with wedged shaped pieces above eye painted white with a solid black curvilinear design; black brows outlined in white; green face, white above beak and at jaw line; red optic liner, black and white eye; below black beak red nostril outlined in white; red lip band; wedge shaped pieces protruding from mouth are white with a solid black curvilinear design; underside of lower beak has two distinct painted parts; rear of beak, including wedge shaped pieces on either side, are painted white with black spots, down feathers glued to surface; upper portion of lower beak is black with a red lip band around three sides. Interior open: beaks painted black; red lip band visible on lower beak portion; beaks slightly concave, rim of upper beak portions graduate in depth; wedge shaped pieces form a circle around human face mask; dogfish design at the four cardinal points. Human face has hair inserted into drilled holes along top rim; white forehead has three green-grey u forms outlined in red, thin black line defines centre split u; black brows; green eye area and nose; eyes are white bored circles with red eye sockets; red nostrils; white cheeks have four solid green-grey u forms on either side of mouth; black moustache-like line extends from nostrils to corner of mouth; open red lipped mouth; white jaw area has four rows of short horizontal strips; black chin; black smudges on jaw and under lower lip.
Black raven with red claws and tongue in profile and facing to the right side. Wings extended downwards. Wing on the left side is partially hidden by the body. Repeating motif of an ovoid with downward pointing eyelid lines and a circular pupil, are on the beak and at the top of the wings. Red claws. Pencil inscription along the bottom edge reads '34/120 raven beau dick '77'. The print is on a vertically rectangular, mint wintergreen paper piece.
