FROM CARD: "MODEL CARVED FROM ONE PIECE OF WOOD, WITH TWO THWARTS, WHICH ORIGINALLY HAD FIGURES SITTING ON THEM BUT WHICH WERE NOT PRESENT IN 1963-R. ELDER. ORIGINALLY HAD WHITE PAINT OUTSIDE AND RED INSIDE BUT MOST OF IT HAS COME OFF. ON THE PROW END THERE IS A HEAVY WOODEN EXTENSION FOR BREAKING THE WAY THROUGH ICE. THOUGH ORIGINAL CARD SAID WAS "BADLY DAMAGED", AS A WHOLE THERE IS NO DAMAGE (EXCEPT PAINT LOSS AND THE MISLAYING OF THE FIGURES) NOV. 1963. R. ELDER."

FROM CARD: "CUT OUT OF LIGHT YELLOW WOOD, ELABORATELY CARVED AND FANCIFULLY PAINTED. REPRESENTS THE DUCK (THE BODY FORMING THE RATTLE BOX) WITH THE MEDICINE-MAN (SHAMAN) ON ITS BACK. THE DUCK'S TAIL IS NEARLY UPRIGHT AND IS CARVED TO REPRESENT A GROTESQUE FACE, WITH A LONG BILL EXTENDING TO THE SHAMAN'S MOUTH, WHO IS SUPPOSED TO BE SUCKING POISON THERE FROM; ON THIS BILL ARE TWO SMALL FROGS. THE HANDLE EXTENDS FROM THE REAR PART OF THE DUCKS BODY. LENGTH, 12 1/2 INCHES. NO. ON PRINTED LABEL 1,138 AN ERROR."

PAINTED BURNT RED AND SOME BLACK. AS USUAL MADE IN TWO PARTS LENGTHWISE SO THE HOLLOW CAN HAVE BEANS OR OTHERWISE TO SERVE AS A RATTLE. ILLUS. IN USNM AR, 1888; PL. 58, FIG. 303; P. 330. Crossroads of Continents catalogue caption identifies: "Shaman's rattle, Tlingit. This rattle may represent the shaman himself or one of his spirits. His collarbones and vertebrae are sculpted in relief. The grinning face and animated posture of his detailed hands give vitality to the figure. Human hair forms his moustache, beard, and hair, which is long and disheveled in the manner of Tlingit shamans. Asymmetrical paint designs on the face are also typical of shamans."

FROM CARD: "PEOPLE: *TLINGIT OF SITKA. REMARKS: MADE OF WOOD, CARVED IN TOTEMIC DESIGNS AND INLAID WITH HALIOTIS SHELL. *THERE IS SOME CONFUSION AS TO THE PROVENIENCE OF THIS SPECIMEN. ACCORDING TO THE CATALOG BOOK IT IS ALEUT, BUT IN USNM AR 1884, PT II, PL. XVII (LEGEND) IT APPEARS TO BE TLINGIT (SITKA). IT IS VERY SIMILAR TO #20771 COLL. BY J. G. SWAN AT SITKA IN 1875. BOTH SPECIMENS ARE EXTENSIVELY CARVED IN TYPICAL NW COAST ART MOTIFS. GEP. THE TLINKIT ARE KNOWN NOT TO HAVE USED THE THROWING STICK, WHILE IT OCCURS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE ESKIMO AREA. ILLUS. Original catalogue lists locality as Unalaska/Ounalaska, i.e. Aleutian Islands, but object was later published/identified as Tlingit from Sitka.Florence Sheakley, elder, made the following comments during the Tlingit Recovering Voices Community Research Visit, March 13-March 24, 2017. The design on this object is Eagle, and so belongs to the Eagle clan, but might have been made for trade.
