Baby CarrierD1.456

Basketry baby carrier, or cradle, made of coiled work (bifurcated stitches) with parallel slat base construction. Decorated with partial beading. At the head portion, the top half is fully beaded in cat-tail while the lower half has staggered shapes in red cherry bark and cat-tail. Towards the foot end, these shapes form a stepped pattern. Rim is imbricated in red cherry bark.

Roughly rectangular, tan-coloured basket with flaring sides and three looped hide handles. Simple coiled work (bifurcated stitches). Handles are laced and tied. Partial imbrication: vertical bands around the sides of linear and geometric patterning in red, black and white.

BasketD1.393 a-b

Basket base (a) and lid (b) constructed in simple coiled work (bifurcated stitches) with a watch-spring base and lid construction, and partially beaded. Decorated with a series of two vertically connected almond shapes alternating with short vertical lines extending down from the shoulder of the base. The almond shapes alternate in red and black and have off-white bulrush where they join. The design is bordered by a dotted line at the shoulder and bottom edge. Every fourth row is beaded in black on the lid.

Large rectangular coiled basket (bifurcated stitches). Elongated watch-spring base construction. Remains of design indicate horizontal lines of beading, in cat-tail grass (?), with intervals of imbrication alternating between red and dark cherry bark. One row of beading in cherry bark on base.

Square frontlet with a carved human face with heavy black eyebrows and abalone shell inlay for eyes and teeth. Face is bordered on three sides by a band of carved human faces, hands and feet: small human faces are partially painted blue, with black eyes and eyebrows; hands and feet are red; in between the small faces are pieces of abalone shell.
