Powder HornA1586

Hollow, curved section of yellow-brown horn with a stick-like wooden stopper at the pointed end and a wooden plug affixed with metal rivets blocking the large end. A braided srting strap with tassels runs from the stopper to the centre of the plug.

Cedar root splint foundation basket with twined elements of cedar root and design elements in aniline dyed cedar root. Plain twined openwork with the direction of weave changing every three rows; overcast rim and handle. Four weft strands are dyed black and are near the top, middle, bottom and the base of basket. Unevenly spaced are pink and one purple coloured warp strand.

Wooden mask adorned with cedar bark fringe at back that extends down past the bottom of the mask. Face is carved forward with a strong downward slant. There are two deeply carved ridges running from nose to temples that are accentuated with black lines. There are heavy black brows at the top of the face, a scalloped design in black below the cheeks, a dark yellow hooked nose with red nostrils, pursed protruding red lips, and a slightly pointed chin with a short horse hair beard. A feather with a long shaft protrudes upwards from one side and there is a bunch of white, grey and grey-brown feathers attached to a pointed piece of wood with adhesive fabric tape (b) and inserted into a hole in the top of the mask. The edge of the mask on the sides of the face and chin is painted brown.

Carved, wooden, raven mask with a long beak. The beak is hinged with rubber pieces on either side; glued shut. The beak is painted black with a red mouth and nose. The eyes are outlined in black on a white with a green ovoid shaped background; brow is black. Attached to the top of the head is a braid of cedar with long stripes that hand down to cover the wearer. The inside of the mask is hollow with the exception of an attached twine cord that assisted the beak in opening and shutting. The mask is painted black, red, green and white with Northwest Coast stylized designs.
