Transformation MaskA7879

Carved, wooden, raven and human transformation mask. The exterior consists of a long black beak, red mouth and stylized nose. The beak and sides are hinged with pieces of fibre and leather, nailed to all sides. The eyes are white, outlined in black on a white background surrounded by a green ovoid; brow is black. Nailed to the top of the head are numerous broken raven feathers. Another figure is painted underneath the mouth. The mask opens in three directions to expose a painted human face with cutout nostrils and mouth. The three open boards are detailed with ovoids, s-shapes, U’s and split U’s. The back is partially hollowed. There is an attached twine cord that assisted the beak in opening and shutting. The mask is painted black, red, white and green with Northwest Coast stylized designs. There is a large metal ring nailed into the top of the head, probably for display purposes.

Flared cylindrical coiled basket (bifurcated stitches) with short foot and looped handles from top row of coils. Watch-spring base construction. Imbricated design in two staggered rows of diamond shapes, alternating between black cherry bark outline, then cat-tail grass (?), and red cherry bark at center, and red cherry bark outline with cat-tail grass (?) and a dark cherry bark center. Top row of imbrication near rim alternating between red cherry bark stitches and dark cherry bark stitches. Foot has the same configuration as near rim.

Gourd shaped coiled rattle with separate handle (part b). Fully imbricated in alternating cat-tail grass and red cherry bark with black cherry bark design of vertical zig-zag. Handle has wooden base and woven covering, beaded in alternating rows of dark and red cherry bark. Metal pieces inserted to make sound.

Wooden winged puppet; in the form of a human-like figure, painted white, with wings on his back. The spread wings are decorated with stylized U-forms, split U’s, S shapes and ovoids. The arms are bent at the elbows with the forearms extended and palms facing up. The face is white with red, black and brown detailing. Silver foil under the eyes. The head, wings, shoulders, elbows and feet are all moveable.The colours are white, red, black, and green.

Staff featuring figures that are carved in the form of coppers and geometric shapes; the middle u-shape appears to have a Chilkat or ancestor face on it. The handle has shredded cedar bark attached with fibre twine. Colours used are black and red.

Carved, wooden dish in the shape of a loon with the body (part a) and head (part b) connected by a piece of dowel. The beak, eyes and wings are incised while the rest is painted black, red, green and yellow on a grey background with Northwest Coast stylized forms. The neck has a necklace painted on. The opening is rectangular in shape.

Carved, wooden, supernatural raven mask with a long beak and circular, cutout nostrils. The beak is hinged with piece of rubber on either side; nailed shut. The beak is painted black with red nostrils and mouth. There are s-shapes carved by the nostrils with red paint around. Above the nostrils is a protrusion. The eyes are white, outlined in black on a white, ovoid shaped background; brow is black. Attached to the top of the head are short strips of cedar bark creating a fringe. The inside of the mask is hollow. The mask is painted black, red, and white with Northwest Coast stylized designs.
