Cylindrical basket with wool yarn embroidery. Sea grass (probably wild barley or wild pea) split into finer strands; pink, green, pale green, and pale purple yarn. Two bands of checker work pattern. Plain twine weave and crossed warp weave openwork with embroidery in yarn.

HatA3723

Dome shaped, double-woven, cedar bark hat with a design that is painted on. The hat has plaiting at the top which is outlined with double strand twining. The warps are then split and the twining becomes finer. A row of triple strand twining separates the top from the sides of the hat. The body of the hat is woven with double strand twining and features a painted design. The design is expansive; the main elements are two large eyes in black outlined in green with grey-blue under brow. The bottom rim of the hat has a row of triple strand twining. The hat liner is woven in a similar manner to the exterior hat, but not as finely. The liner does not extend to the full height of the hat, but stops just below the hat band which is twill woven (over two, under one).

Rectangular basket of simple coiled work (bifurcated stitches) with parallel slat base construction and splint rim loops in four places to attach handles to. Basket is partially beaded. Every other slat has four rows of beading in a stepped design four stitches wide, with two vertical lines per side. The ends have two vertical lines of beading (over two stitches) every other slat. Colour: light tan with red patterning.

Short heavy club with bulbous head. Handle butt is carved with a face on one side whose mouth corresponds with a half-inch hole through the butt. Plain rounded handle expands into hexagonal fore-shaft which tapers and then expands to a slightly flattened ball-shaped head. Heavy working marks, especially on head. Very highly polished dark finish.
