Soul Catcher3260/131

Soul catcher made of a tubular piece of grizzly bear shin bone, flared at each open end. The ends are split partway to look like open animal mouths. Eyes are carved above each mouth with incised designs to indicate nostrils. A human-like face and torso, with hands raised to his chin, is carved at top centre, with two small holes drilled at either side of face.

Part of a forehead ornament (kapkap) made of tortoise shell. The carved shell ornament has four long points at bottom, with two holes bored through the shell at centre above, and three spines supporting a series of open triangles. The ornament is tied, at multiple points, by cotton thread onto the back of a trimmed postcard. The image on the front of the postcard shows a black and white photo of the Benin Gallery of the Cranmore Ethnographical Museum.

Nose Ring2934/2

Brown coloured, circular nose ring cut at the top centre to allow insertion onto the nose. The piece flares and thickens slightly toward the centre bottom. The surface is a mottled brown, covered in thin dark brown cracks.

Raven RattleNbz798

Rattle depicting a horizontal raven with a straight beak, which rests upon the bird's chest. The wings are at the sides and there are five splayed protruding tail feathers at the bottom. The bird figure is painted blue with red accents delineating the beak and feathers. A long unpainted handle extends from the base of body. There is a horizontal cut through the body and the handle. The two pieces have been nailed together with one nail, which is located in the handle at base of the raven's body. The nail protrudes through the underside of the handle. The hollow body likely contains pebbles, which create noise when shaken.
