[This text on card probably taken from USNM Annual Report, 1893; p. 642 description of plate 19, Fig 2.:] SKIN ARMOR:--MADE OF THICK TANNED ELK OR MOOSE SKIN FOLDED TWICE INTO OBLONG FORM LIKE A SHEET OF NOTE PAPER. SEWED OVER THE SHOULDERS AND STRENGTHENED INSIDE BY HINGE PIECES. OPEN ALONG RIGHT SIDE, THE EDGES CUT INTO COARSE FRINGE. A SHORT SLIT DOWN LEFT SIDE BELOW THE SHOULDER LEAVES A PASSAGE FOR THE LEFT ARM. ABOUT MIDWAY NEAR THE RIGHT SIDE IS FASTENED A WOODEN TOGGLE, BY WHICH, PROBABLY, WAS SUSPENDED THE DAGGER. THE FRONT OF THE COAT IS DISCOLORED AND DENTED AS THOUGH AN ATTEMPT HAS BEEN MADE TO RENDER THE LEATHER MORE DENSE BY HAMMERING. THE LEATHER HAS PERHAPS ALSO BEEN TREATED WITH GLUE, AS DESCRIBED BY FATHER MORICE AMONG THE TINNE [Athabaskans]. Totems from top down: two cloud-hatted watchers of high rank; head of bearded man, Nenki'lslas "Great One in the Sea"; eagle; killerwhale woman, with labret, tail turns up in front of pole; killerwhale, the face between his ears said to be his fin (informant Fannie Jones called this a shark "k!at, not the killerwhale). FROM CARD: "STICK ARMOR. WOVEN WITH SINEW AND WOOLEN CORD, 73 STICKS. ROD ARMOR:--COMPOSED OF 72 PEELED RODS OF UNIFORM LENGTH AND DIAMETER, HELD IN VERTICAL SERIES BY ALTERNATE BANDS OF WEAVING OF WOOLEN AND SINEW CORD. THE RODS ARE BUNCHED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BAND. THE ENDS OF THE RODS ARE NEATLY HOLLOWED OUT, FORMING CUP CAVITIES, AND THERE ARE FOUR EQUIDISTANT VERTICAL BANDS OF RED PAINT. THIS BAND WAS PROBABLY WORN WITH A SKIN COAT, BOTH SPECIMENS HAVE BEEN SECURED FROM THE SAME NATIVE. THERE APPEARS TO BE NO DEVICE TO PREVENT THE ROD BAND SLIPPING DOWN. BASE IS A THICK BOARD WITH SIDES FASTENED TO IT. (ALL PLAIN). TOP IS A THICK BOARD WITH CARVED AND PAINTED SIDES ORIGINALLY FASTENED TO IT. (THE LASHING IS NOT NOW (1973) PRESENT)."

Moccasins had originally been attributed as possibly Athabascan, but Athabascan advisers for the Arctic Studies Center exhibit "Sharing Knowledge: Alaska Native Peoples and the Smithsonian Collections" at the Anchorage Museum, did not recognize the beading style, and art historian Kate Duncan identified them as Interior Tlingit or Tahltan, based on their style of beading and shape - including high wool cloth cuffs and squared-off toes. Collector Herbert G. Ogden of the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey purchased them at the coastal Tlingit village of Klukwan before 1895, a reminder of the extensive Tlingit trade with interior peoples that took place through Klukwan and the Chilkat River valley. Tlingit leaders dressed in Athabascan caribou-skin clothing and moccasins, and coastal clans adopted songs and dances from their interior trading partners. The letter of transfer in the accession file for the collection, dated August 1, 1895, states that items were "collected among the Alaskan Indians on Chilkat river".This object is on loan to the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center, from 2010 through 2027.

Ruth Demmert, Alan Zuboff, and Linda Wynne made the following comments during the Tlingit Recovering Voices Community Research Visit, March 13-March 24. The design on this drum is not Tlingit and the elders commented they had not seen anything like it before. The handle and design of this object is unusual in comparison to similar Tlingit made objects.This is definitely not Tlingit and looks like a fake.Catalog card says Tlingit, but multiple sources have confirmed that it is not. Origin unknown, possibly "fake".
