USED TO FACILITATE THE CARRYING OF HEAVILY LADEN BASKETS. THE ROPES ARE FASTENED TO THE BASKET, WHICH IS HELD ON THE BACK BY THE WOVEN STRAP PLACED OVER THE FOREHEAD OF THE CARRIER. Accession file identifies original #91, Catalogue No. E20876, as stone mortar and pestle from Koutznow [i.e. Hutsnuwu people], Alaska. Anthropology Catalogue ledger book lists locality as Admiralty Island.

From Swan tag with artifact: "This bark was formerly woven into blankets as is now down by some of the tribes of the West Coast of Vancouver Id. The inner bark of common cedar of N.W. Coast arbor vitae for textile fabrics Bedding of infants, twine, lines, basket work +c."
From card for E23523-46: "Dec 20, 1972, Bill Holm says that these are definitely Haida."Cultural ID for paddles E23523 - 23546 is somewhat in question. They were catalogued as Clallam, Bill Holm has identified them as Haida, but James Swan in correspondence in the accession file references 24 Bella Bella paddles.
