Necklace1590/281

A necklace of 187 red and white beads. The lower beads are in groups of five (2 white, 1 red and 2 white) with a beaver strung at each fifth bead. There are six beavers on each side. At the base is a Lorraine cross. Completing the necklace on each side is a two-white and two-red bead pattern. Maker’s mark stamped on the beavers. Further stamp on the base of the cross.

Crescent-shaped convex gorget. Engraved at centre is a First Nations profile, flanked by similar starburst motifs with 16-branch leaf-like design. The representation at centre shows shaved head, few hairs and pony tail, and 7-bead necklace. 8 small symetrically-placed stars. Zigzag engraving around the periphery. Bosses at each end on front linked to rings on reverse for suspension. Two stamped marks.

Oval shaped abalone shell that has a series of evenly spaced holes across the top of the concave surface. Holes are hollowed out barnacle shells. On the convex side, there is a large cluster of barnacle shells attached to the larger abalone shell to one side. The concave side has a pearly appearance while the convex side has a bumpy texture.

A small dark brown-black finished wood box with a rectangular shape. The lid (part b) slides vertically off of the top of the box (part a). The box has intricate geometric triangular patterns. The lid is carved with a human figure (tiki) that has an elaborate headdress, a pair of two long grooves slanting diagonally downward toward the short angular nose, circular shell eyes, a compressed heart-shaped mouth opening to show the tongue, spirals on the shoulders, geometric patterns on the body, and three-fingered hands resting under the belly.
