Small woven basket. Basket flares widely from a small round base toward lip. Construction is grass fibre woven around sedge root into a tube, thin at bottom centre, thickening as it winds up to rim. Red-brown dyed grass is used to create an irregular pattern of lines and triangles extending from base to top in shades of brown and red brown. This is visible on both interior and exterior of basket.

Woven basket for winnowing grain. Basket is low and shallow, flaring widely from a small base toward lip. Construction is grass fibre woven around sedge root into thick tubes, winding up from bottom centre to rim. Brown dyed grass is used to create a pattern of triangles across the inside and exterior of the basket. Offset concentric circles of brown decorate the base.

Model House3201/7

Model rondavel style house, made of clay and sticks. Cone-on-cylinder hut is round, with a slightly overhanging cone-shaped roof. Walls are thick, and reinforced with thin wood sticks which hold the roof onto the walls, and emerge slightly at top. A door and two small widows are cut into the clay, and a plaque has been attached by sticks above the door. At back is a second door with a prominent frame, filled by a cube of clay. The house and roof surfaces have scratched writing in English, with text such as “good clay soil”, “beautiful”, and “strong one hut”.

Woven basket. Basket is low and shallow, flaring widely from a small base toward lip. Construction is plant fibre woven into thick tubes, winding up from bottom centre to rim. Brown and orange dyed fibre is used to create the outline of a four pointed shape across the basket. Tube construction is held together by evenly placed, twisted threads incorporated into the weave that run vertically. Rim has a freestanding scalloped edge made from the same tube as the basket.

Doll3201/5

Doll figure is made of a cotton under- form, covered at bottom by a red and blue skirt with encircling rows of white beads. Torso and neck are wrapped with a twisted cord of undyed plant fibre, and its head of brown cotton perched at top. Hair made of twisted fibre hangs to below chin, eyes are made of white and orange beads; a line of white beads runs from forehead to chin. A vest of animal hair wraps around the doll’s shoulders and chest, and canvas arms emerge from sides. Bracelets of multi-coloured beads hang from elbows and wrists, and fingers are made of the same. Doll holds a hair whisk in one hand.

Fabric doll. Doll is made of brown polyester, dressed in a suit of dark green cotton with a red belt. Large pockets decorate the front, and a matching green bag is slung over the right shoulder. A silver chain drapes from right shoulder to left hip. Facial features are stitched thread, with a red mouth and white and black eyes. Over the black hair is a Basotho style hat, made of thick woven plant fibre. The hat comes to a point at top, where there is a loop.

Strainer3201/3

Strainer is tubular in shape, long, woven of twisted sedge (loli) fibres, with strands tied off at top, and bunched and tied at bottom. A loop is incorporated in this tie, from which to hang the strainer.
