Queen Mother Head Sculpture2853/6

Cast bronze, hollow female head. The face has a pronounced brow with three small protruding marks above each eye, possibly representing scarification. Below the slightly protruding lips is a shallow jaw line leading to a long neck which is decorated with three thin rings. On the head is an elaborate headdress or hairstyle, starting at the hair line and culminating in a tall, thin cone-shaped projection at the top of the head that curves slightly forward. It is decorated with angled lines that are raised and crossed, making a diamond pattern. Decorations attached to the headdress hang down in front of the ears and at the back of the neck. The inside of the head is hollow and has a wire hanging halfway down from the point of the headdress.

Figure2853/2

Kneeling figure. The head is elongated and topped with a round headdress that has a deep bowl at its centre. Scratches in the bowl suggest it was used as a container in some form. Carved into the face are eyes and a mouth, a hole for a right ear, and at left, a large oval shape. Below the short neck is a narrow chest and two arms bent so that the hands rest on the stomach, where a hole has been bored. The left side of the figure shows a leg bent at the hip and knee, indicating the figure is kneeling. The right side beneath the arm is not clearly carved.

Figure2853/7

A female figure carved in bone. The figure has a large, relatively flat head to front and back, with three horn-like projections rising out of the top. An inverted teardrop shape is carved into the prominent forehead between the eyes. The ears are narrow and carved close to the head, the nose is wide, and the mouth is thin-lipped. The neck is made up of two carved rings, leading in back to prominently carved shoulders and buttocks, and in front to breasts and a protruding stomach. Arms hang straight down, ending at the hips, and have no hands. The legs are slightly bent at the knees, and end at feet carved into a round base with a hole in the centre. Many areas of the body have been texturized with a pattern of fine carved lines, most prominently on buttocks, shoulders and horns. The rough interior of the bone can be seen on the top of the head, groin area, and centre of the base.

Figure2853/5

A cast bronze figure wearing an elaborate headdress that has a woven cap with large curved elements attached on top and to the front. Smaller decorations hang down the neck of the figure in back, and long strings hang down to the waist, attached to the cap in front of the ears. A wide, ringed neck ornament juts out past the chin. The figure wears a long sleeved garment that ends mid-shin and is decorated with raised, angled lines that make a diamond pattern. The left arm is slightly bent, with the hand resting on the hip, while the left arm is bent at a 90 degree angle and the hand holds a large curved ornament or weapon with a twisted circular handle. This element is also attached to the figure at the head and thigh. The legs protrude from the bottom edge of the tunic at the mid-shin, and end in rough feet on a square base that is too small to balance the figure when standing.
