Decorative Textile3275/20

V-shaped, multicoloured, embroidered, decorative band. Textile has an under layer of linen, upon which a pattern is cross-stitched. A repeating pattern of coloured triangles is set onto squares of dark pink, orange, white, and maroon runs down the centre of both arms of the V, with smaller versions along the edge. Bottom side of textile holds a think fringe of twisted purple fibre, each ending in a white plastic bead. Back of textile is undecorated green linen.

Sash3275/10

Sash or headband. Short textile is narrow in width, with twisted fringe at each end. Dye is ikat, in dark blue with a regular pattern of lines showing five large star shapes interspersed with lines of four small, all in white. Edge pattern near fringe is a jagged zigzag.

Carpet Beater3275/24

Beater used to push down weft during construction of a carpet. Implement is a large metal comb, tines long and rectangular, shorn off at an angle at tip. Metal slabs are used to separate tines at back of comb, with one extending upward to fit inside the handle which sits on top of comb at a steep angle. Handle is made of two pieces of wood, curving back to fit the hand. Pommel is rounded.

Effigy Figure3275/7 a-c

Wooden male figure in standing position, with two large, flat feet, its knees slightly bent. Head is large with a carefully carved face. Mouth is a thin line, a small nose protrudes above, eyes are almond shaped and made of bone with a small hole carved at centre. Ears have two anterior curls, and have remnants of blue paint at back. Upper arms hang at sides, with forearms and hands (parts b and c) separate pieces that attach at elbows to allow positioning at an upward angle. A loin cloth is wrapped around figure’s waist, mainly brown-grey in colour with a stripe of orange around the waistband. Cloth covers a prominent phallus.

Food Cover3275/21

Food cover or table cloth. Square cloth is dark red, embroidered on one half of the diagonal with flower shapes, vines and leaves in colours of orange, dark pink, black and green. The adjacent edges hold long panels with matching squares of embroidery also in these colours. A thick fringe hangs from the bottom of the panels, each with a small white bead at the end. Underside of object is undecorated.

Carpet Beater3275/5

Beater used to push down weft during construction of a carpet. Implement is a large comb made of metal, tines long and triangular in profile, flat in width. They are melded together toward back, where comb is fitted at a 90 degree angle into the thick wooden handle.

Finger Guard3275/4

Three finger guards, used in carpet weaving. The wooden guards are long and narrow, each with a large hollowed-out hook that slides onto the finger to protect it while working. The tips of two are bent at an angle, while the middle guard is only slightly so. Each has a flat portion above the hook that rests along the back of the hand. The guards each have a hole in the top through which twine is strung to tie them together.

Cotton turban. Garment is thin and very long, made of light, fine fabric that is dyed in diagonal lines of bright pink-purple interspersed with panels of mottled brown, orange and blue lines. An thick embroidered panel of metallic copper thread has been sewn to one end of the garment, with a much thinner panel at the other end.

Cotton turban. Garment is thin and very long, made of light, fine fabric that is dyed in chevron patterning in dark pink, red, yellow, green, orange, white and blue. Chevrons vary between thick and thin widths. An embroidered panel of metallic gold thread sits at one end of the garment. Edges are finished with a tight roll.
