The umiak is a wood framed whaleboat with two rowers and a steerer. In the front a man is using his harpoon to push away a lump of ice. Below the umiak are the kayaks. Three of the kayaks are being paddled and two have a sealskin float on the back. However, in the fourth kayak, at the bottom right of the image, the kayaker is holding a telescope in his hand. Immediately below this kayaker is the floe edge.
