Hyena Mask3420/55

Mask carved from wood and painted. The animal face has a keyhole-like shape - a wide rounded top that narrows to a rectangular lower jaw. A large reddish-brown ridge extends over the back of the head, and carries down to the centre of the face, doubling as a nose. There are two small square cutout eye holes. The face is painted with black and white geometric designs of repeating triangles. Two large pointed ears extend out from the top of the head. Dark teal plant fibre hair is attached to the back.

Writing tablet, or prayer board. Invocations for blessings handwritten on the front. The board is rectangular, with one large round projection at the top, and two small rectangular feet at the base. Writing on both sides of board.

Mask3420/37

Mask with concave oval face with ridge down centre, cutout triangular eye holes, and diagonal lines of triangles outlined in white around the sides. Attached to back is long reddish-brown plant fibre hair that hangs down. A vertical rectangular superstructure extends up from the face mask as well as a small horned animal head with standing female figure above, which is mounted in front and attached to the face mask. The panel is carved and painted with geometric designs and one large square section of checkerboard pattern in black and white and both front and back. Surmounted by three stacked downward-facing triangles.

Mask3420/35

Yatenga mask has spherical face covered in a repeating triangle pattern with diamond cutout eye holes within a white horizontal band. Extending down from the face is a long black rectangular mouth with carved red concentric triangles on top. A large projection extends up from the face mask with slit down centre. It is painted with a large repeating triangle design. There is a cloth tie attached to either side of the face, and a wooden bite bar through the interior.

Buffalo Headdress3420/47

Wooden bovine headdress (or helmet mask). Carved from wood and covered with cloth and glass beads. The entire mask is decorated with bright blue beads, with eyes of red and white beads, nostrils and lips in red. The muzzle tapers somewhat between the head and nose, with the mouth open, exposing large block teeth and a tongue. There are small rounded ears, and two long horns that extend toward the back. There are short lengths of cord knotted at the back.

Headrest carved from a single piece of wood. The upper surface is smooth, and curves upwards to points on either side. There two legs, one at each end, and panel at centre with an hourglass-shaped cutout, which rests on a flat oval base. The sides are incised with designs.

Mask3420/24 a-b

Wood rectangular face mask (part a) with tall ladder-like superstructure. The face mask has two sunken rectangular areas on either side of the nose, and two cutout square eye holes below a rounded brow ridge. Attached to the back of the mask is brown plant fibre hair. Extending from the top of the head, between the blue ears, is a tall superstructure of openwork panels alternating between various hourglass shapes, and lines, tapering in at the end. The superstructure is two sections, split between the fifth and sixth panel (part b). The two sections are tied together with small strips of leather.

Carved and painted mask. The face mask section has a sunken lower face with a strong brow ridge, two triangular cutout eye holes, a thin nose and a small pouted mouth. Large pointed ears extend up and the forehead is decorated with a single raised line down the centre. The superstructure is a female figure with projecting breasts, square shoulders, arms bent at the elbow with one hand on her leg and the other holding a ceramic vessel on her head.

Monkey Mask3420/13

Monkey mask carved of wood and painted. White mask has a flat face, with sunken bright pink rectangular sections on either side of the nose, and cutout rectangular eyes. Seated white monkey figure has thin curved torso with long arms that rest on its knees. Its face and front are painted black. The monkey has slit eyes, a long triangular nose and mouth.

Headdress or helmet mask carved from wood and painted. Dome-shaped mask with central column or neck extending upwards to animal head. The head has a tapered muzzle, open mouth with small jagged teeth, and pointed upright ears. The base of the mask has holes drilled through all around the edge. The entire mask is painted with white spots.
