Gourd Bottle3154/5 a-d

Gourd bottle with cover. Undecorated drinking gourd for carrying sake is oblong, bulbous on top and bottom, with a small, short neck. Object has an even, dark orange patina. A dark purple cotton cord is wrapped three times around the waist of the gourd and then trails, holding the small wooden stopper (part b) by being inserted through a hole bored at centre. Part c is a small wooden tile with an orange thread tied through a hole at top, a Japanese character drawn in ink on one side of the tile and a pencil drawing of the gourd on the other. Part d is a silk carrying bag, rounded at bottom, light tan in colour, with a purple drawstring at neck.

Gourd Bottle3154/6 a-c

Gourd bottle with net and cover. Undecorated drinking gourd for carrying sake is tall, bulbous on bottom, narrowing toward mouth which is capped with a short wooden stopper shaped like a tree. Stopper has three Japanese characters scratched into the base. A woven carrying net (part b) loosely surrounds the gourd, with base woven into a star pattern. The neck of the net is made of a cord that loops through the stopper and creates a handle for the gourd to be carried by. Part c is a grey-green textured silk bag into which fits the gourd. It has a tan drawstring at neck.

Gourd Bottle3154/4 a-c

Gourd bottle with box. Undecorated drinking gourd for carrying sake is tall, bulbous on top and bottom, with a rounded lip surrounding the mouth at top. Surface is dark orange with a high shine. A lighter orange cord is wrapped and knotted around the waist of the vessel, with trailing end holding a small, dark wooden stopper by its loop. Parts b and c are a wooden box and lid that the gourd is carried in. A green ribbon is attached to the box, meant to tie the lid in place. The lid has writing in Japanese characters in black ink on both sides.

Gourd Bottle3154/3

Gourd bottle with cotton net bag. Undecorated drinking gourd for carrying sake is wide and bulbous on bottom, narrowing toward top through decreasingly smaller midsection and neck bulbs. A wooden stopper is inserted into the mouth at top, and is carved in a two-ring design through which a woven dark purple cord is threaded. Cord is woven into the neck of an openly constructed net bag that completely encloses the gourd.

Gourd Bottle3154/2 a-b

Gourd bottle with cover. Undecorated drinking gourd for carrying sake is tall, bulbous on bottom, round and elongated on top, capped with a metal neck and stopper. Surface is dark orange. A lighter orange cord is wrapped three times around the waist of the vessel, holding a green stone ring, then passing through a metal loop on the stopper, and finally through a round wooden bead. Part b is a silk carrying bag, rounded at bottom, dark blue with light grey foliage on the outside, and bright red and green on the interior. A brown drawstring closes the bag at neck.

Gourd Bottle3154/1 a-e

Gourd bottle with box. Gourd is tall, bulbous on top and bottom, with a small bulb emerging from side at top. A stopper (part b) has been carved like a duck bill and fits horizontally into the hole in the bulb. Vessel's patina is a dark orange with a high shine. A lighter orange cord is wrapped several times around the neck of the gourd, with trailing end holding a dark brown wooden hoop. Gourd is filled with small metal balls. Part c is a dark purple and green silk carrying bag with an orange drawstring cord. Parts d and e are the bottom and lid of a light tan wooden carrying box with Japanese characters written in ink directly on the lid top, and on an adhered slip of paper on the underside.

Decorated Gourd3592/7

Small intricately pyro-engraved gourd. The top is carved with floral designs. Below, a band that reads "POR MAX INGA A' on one side, and 'ARTE PERUANO' on the opposite side. The panel around the exterior of the gourd with scene of village life - people socialising around tables, working with farm animals. Below, twisted band. Then, alternating flowers around an uncarved flower shape on base, is carved, "La Encantada, Chulucanas, Piura, Peru 6/2/80".

Bird Figure3592/6

Small pyro-engraved bird figure. The bird's head and body is made from a single gourd, with the stem as the neck and head. A beak is attached to the face and coloured yellow. The bird stands on two tall, thin legs, which are mounted on a convex base made from the bottom of a gourd. The bird's feet are engraved into the gourd. Another piece of gourd is attached to the back of the bird as tail feathers. The side of the base has "MAX INGA A, La Encantada, Chulucanas, Piura, Peru 27-4-80" carved into it.

Decorated Gourd3592/4

Small pyro-engraved gourd. The gourd is intricately engraved all over. A detailed flower extends out around the stem. It is separated from the main panel by a band with a twisted rope design. The main panel wraps around the body, depicting a scene of people wading through water while a donkey pulls a woman who is lying down on a two-wheeled cart. There are also two men trying to support a structure, while two women walk away carrying things. The scene is labelled 'Senora en Estado llevandola al Dr. en aguas de las fuertes lluvias del ano '83'. Below, a band that reads ARTE PERUANO on one side, and POR MAX INGA A on the opposite side, with two cross-hatching in between. The base has a flower design, within which is etched 'La Encantada, Chulucanas, Piura, Peru 3-2-84'.

Decorated Gourd3592/9

Small pyro-engraved gourd with a short projection on top. The gourd is intricately engraved all over. The small projection is has branches, flowers, leaves and birds, with heart-shaped leaves extending out from the stem. A band with a plaited design separates the top from the panel. The main panel wraps around the body, depicting a scene of childbirth on one side, and a pregnant woman lying in bed being cared for be three other women on the opposite side. The background is filled with a fine line cross-hatching. Below, a band that reads POR JOSE NOLE with two lines of zigzags creating a repeating diamond pattern through the remainder of the band. The base is plain, with 'La Encantada' etched.
