BasketB756 a-b

Basket (a) that has a wide, open weaving technique of horizontal plant leaves and vertical bamboo on the sides, a smaller weave of only bamboo at the bottom, and a very tight weave of bamboo strips at the top. An insert (b) of woven bamboo sits inside the bottom of the basket. There are two plant fibre tassels attached to the sides of the basket, and four that hang from the bottom of the basket. A design of vertical lines has been burnt into the border as well as the top row of the wide open weaving section. A monkey skull has been affixed to one side of the basket with its nose facing the bottom of the basket, and it has been painted white underneath the eye sockets. There are two loops on the reverse side, and one on the inside of the basket, likely for attaching straps.

A pair of basketry woven pieces, which taper down from one end. The wider end has a design consisting of natural brown-coloured diamond-shaped outlines on a red background surrounded by a horizontal natural brown-coloured zig zag line along the edge, and two sets of triple horizontal natural brown-coloured rows, one of which is interdispersed while the other is solid near the smaller end. The smaller end is plain natural brown, which has a slit tied together with red cording that has blue tassels.

A wide fabric woven band. Main design consisting of horizontal red diamond shapes on a dark blue background. Strands of natural light grey-yellow and dark red hair are attached along the bottom edge, topped with a band of bark (?). The ends become tasseled cords.

A flat rectangular panel, which has a hanging stick through one end where the design starts with a horizontal zig zag line of cowrie shells on a black background that has three sets of vertical red lines. Below this, there is a horizontal band of three rows that have vertical cowrie shells. Beneath this, there are two horizontal bands twenty-three and twenty-one rows that have horizontal cowrie shells.

Cone-shaped hat that has light brown V-shaped woven designs on a red woven background. To one side is a large flower-like circular attachment that is rimmed with red horse(?) hair. Radiating from the centre are white tube-like shells, and blue shells. A long thick strand of horse(?) hair hangs from the bottom of the flower. The woven rim of the hat is thick and medium brown in colour. There is a short braided grass(?) strand with a loop attached to the top point of the hat.

Two curved and hollow tusks. On each tusk, one end is tapered to a point, while the other end is wrapped with a band of woven reddish-brown grass(?). Part a is punctured at the pointed end where a small fibre loop and a small wooden stick are attached. The overall colour of the tusks is white, yellow, and brown.
