Bill is long and somewhat rounded, with a tall crest sweeping back from the forehead, painted red and black. Black eyes are small and round, while face has designs in green and beak is light grey and red. Head, back, and feathers across torso and wings are outlined in black, with legs painted black and grey. Wings have green and red decoration.

Carved figure of an owl. Bird sits on a small round base, legs and feet at front of body, wings held close to sides, with head angled slightly forward. Beak is large and hooked, under a heavy brow and large square ears atop the head. Eyes are large and round, painted black, while face and beak and are painted green with lines of red. Head, back, and feathers across torso and wings are outlined in black, with yellow bands across the legs and feet. Wings have green and red decoration.

Heron Mask1-1446

The renowned Kwakwaka'wakw artist Mungo Martin identified this transformation mask as his own work. It was made for a chief named Lagius, probably around 1920. The style of carving and painting are recognizable as that of Mungo Martin or his stepfather and mentor Charley James. Although the mask is called Crane in the museum records, the gray color and the hunched attitude when folded are reminiscent of the great blue heron, a bird common to the Kwakwaka'wakw country and often miscalled crane in English. (Holm, Spirit and Ancestor, 1987)

Dzunuk'wa Figure2778/1 a-b

Carved and painted standing Dzunuk'wa figure (a) holding a feast dish (b). The large-headed figure standing on a square brown base is totally flat at back and has outstretched arms that are attached to the black body with pegs. Deep yellow eye sockets beneath a pronounced brow fill half of the face above a red and black nose and pursed red lips; circular yellow designs decorate the chest and knees. The rectangular shaped dish is decorated with a black face on the front, large cross hatch design on the back, yellow at both ends and a red rim and is attached to the centre of the flat hands with pegs.

There are four elongated, inverted red shapes decorated with three pairs of black dashes along the top of the head, from which red lines emanate. Red spots drip down from the bottom back of the head.
