Moon Mask DancersA8003

Rectangular shaped painting depicting three moon mask dancers. All of the dancers are wearing button blankets; one dancer has his back showing displaying a Killer Whale. The two front facing figures are wearing an apron and red neck ring. All of the masks are black, yellow, green and red; similar be show a different phase of the moon. Written in blue pen along the bottom edge is ‘Moon Mask Dancers’ and ‘Chief Henry Speck’.

Three long strips of woven cedar bark, joined lengthwise by stitching to create a wide, belt-like band; each strip is formed by four chains linked together. Ends are bound with skin. Three cedar tassels hang from each end.

Neck RingA7951

Red cedar bark woven in four strands to form a four-sided chain-like ring. The object consists of two such rings sewn together. Bundles of light cedar bark stripes are attached to the ring in four places with thin pieces of hide.

Copper-breaking FigureA7878

Copper-breaking stand, or figure, in the form of a bear. The bear is carved in a crouched position, holding a human face mask in its front paws, with bared teeth. There is an iron platform on top of its head. Painted red, green, white, black and brown. All the teeth and claws are painted white, including the teeth of the mask.

Cradle PuppetA7877 a

Rectangular cradle with a high back. Puppet lies inside, and is painted with black and red paint on its face, chest and hands; fabric arms. Crest-painted cloth underneath puppet. Figure sits up as strings are pulled. Post sticks up at front (said to hold a revolving toy). Head of the figure turns from side to side. Sides and top painted with designs in black, red and green. (Part b is a piece of the cloth that has separated.)
