Pin2862/2

Silver pin used for fastening mantles. The head of the tupu is a flower, with silver leaves surrounding a white opaque glass piece in the centre. To the left and right of the opaque piece are two beads, one green and one blue, below which are two wide leaves. From the leaves hangs a hand, topped by a decorated cuff. The index finger and thumb hold a ring.

Decorated Gourd2862/18

Small, round yellow-orange gourd, with intricate black carvings covering most of the exterior surface. The carvings show important aspects of the area’s natural environment and culture. At top are motifs of father sun and mother moon, surrounded by stylized architecture and mountains, and dense jungle foliage with a snake, jungle cat and bird emerging. Below is a continuous, densely carved montage of village life, with people working in fields, animals, huts and houses, and various kinds of trees. The bottom of the gourd is unmarked. Dried seeds inside the gourd serve as noise making elements.

Apu Stone2862/17

Shaped apu stone, cubical in shape, with seven nodular points. Each point has three thin rings carved into it that have been darkened with pigment. A face is carved into one facet, with round eyes, large nose, and smiling mouth and is surrounded by short carved lines.

Rattle2862/14

Rattle made of a gourd. The head of the rattle is dark brown and bulbous and has various light coloured patterns of lines and swirls carved into it. The wooden handle is wrapped with thin fibre where it meets the head, and is decorated with a long thin bone ? bead. On top of the rattle head is a feather and another smaller bone ? bead, both attached to the rattle by the same fibre as is found on the handle. The rattle contains sound making elements inside the gourd.

Boat Carving2796/4

Solid wood carving of a boat with male and female accordion players and two birds glued onto the deck. The figures have a micorphone on a wire between them, and red lips and pencil darkened eyes and eyebrows. The birds also have darkened eyes, mouths and ears. "2002", "Vamos a Madeira a Manha" and "Sendas" are carved along the front side of the boat. Square notched portholes are carved all the way around the boat. A railing for the deck has been made from bent pieces of thin branches, glued into holes.

Boat Carving2796/2

Solid wood carving of a boat with three accordion players (one woman, two men) standing facing sideways on the deck (glued in place). All three figures have red lips and pencil darkened eyes and eyebrows. Sendas 2003 is carved into the lower side of the front side of the boat. Conjunto Maria Alb (Maria Albertina Band) is carved across the back side of the boat. Square notched portholes are carved all the way around the boat. A railing for the deck has been made from bent pieces of thin branches, glued into holes.

Lenten Costume2796/6 a-b

Two piece costume consisting of a heavy wool hooded jacket (a) and pants (b). Checked design woven in dark purple, dark red, green and yellowish-beige wool embellished with bands of purple wool fringe. The coat opens at the front and closes with metal clips; the underside of the sleeves is made of a solid burgundy coloured fabric; pocket sewn onto front with red thread. Wool pants with elastic waist and metal closure; purple fringe at knees and pant bottoms.
