Hand Puppet3381/6

Mamulengo hand puppet of a 'Tapagé de Cachoeira' character. Head and hands are carved from wood and painted. He has dark brown skin, slanted oval black eyes, small rounded eyebrows, a large nose, large black moustache, and a closed mouth. His fabric body / tunic is light green. The sleeves are a red fabric with large blue flowers, and small white and green flowers, and the skirt is dark blue with red flowers and green or blue leaves. The fabric is adhered(?) to the hands and head, and wrapped with shiny dark green ribbon at the wrists and neck. He holds a small string instrument in his right hand, which has a pink-red strap that extends over his left shoulder. Operated by inserting a hand inside the body of the puppet to control its head and movements.

Calungo hand puppet of a 'Tigre Pintado' (painted tiger) character (the form is more similar to a stuffed animal than a puppet). Head is carved from wood and painted yellow with dark brown spots, and a bright red mouth and red eyes. White whiskers are adhered to the face. The body and tail are covered with a faux fur of yellow with dark brown spots. Depicted with only one leg in front and one in back.

Mamulengo hand puppet of a 'João Cacunda' character. Head, hands and feet are carved from wood and painted. Hands attach to plastic tubing underneath the fabric. He has grey-pink skin, and short white fuzzy hair, beard, and moustache. He has sunken cheeks, a hooked nose, an open red mouth, and large oval black eyes. His fabric body / tunic is green floral-pattern with blue floral sleeves. A clump of polyester batting is used to give the chest form. The fabric is adhered(?) to the hands and head, and wrapped with shiny blue ribbon at the wrists and neck. Operated by inserting a hand inside the body of the puppet to control its head and movements.

Mamulengo rod (stick) puppet of a woman and child character. Heads, hands and feet are carved from wood. The woman has black skin, large black almond-shaped eyes, red glossy lips, curly black hair made of fibre, and a green and red floral scarf on her head. She wears a long-sleeved brightly-coloured dress and blue floral pants, both with yellow cuffs. She is barefoot. The woman's left hand holds a bundle wrapped in blue floral fabric on her head. The woman is holding a baby in her right arm. The baby is pink-beige, with blue eyes, painted chin-length black hair, and is wrapped in blue floral fabric. Operated by a single rod attached to the body.

String Puppet3352/8

Mamulengo string puppet (marionette) of a 'Morte' or Death character. Head, hands and feet are carved from wood and painted. The right hand is stylized to resemble the blade of a scythe. He wears a long-sleeved white shirt and white pants, both with black cuffs, a black veil, and black painted boots. The white face has two large black eye sockets, a wide toothy grin, missing nose, and streaks of red across the face. Attached by several black strings to a wooden control bar composed of a single long piece of wood with one cross-bar.
