Rod PuppetIb342 a-e

A three-dimensional male humanoid figure puppet. Has a large head and jointed arms attached to controlling rods. The red face is positioned straight forward and has bulging eyes with red irises, a large nose, facial hair (moustache, beard, sideburns), and details painted in black. Prominent white upper teeth with fangs extending from the top and the bottom row at each side. Wearing a Gelung supit urang headdress with diadem (jamang), sumping, Garuda Mungkur (short-tongued), and much hair from below headdress. The headdress is black, gold, red, blue, and white. Wide shoulders, a slim waist, and arms with ornaments at the wrist, and bicep in red. Skin is painted gold. Hands are held flat and bending back at the wrist. Braided hemp bandolier of green, yellow, and pink. Pink waistband and green wrapping suspended on both sides. Black velvet pentagon below waist (apron ?) with sequins, brocade, and a orange, and brown batik skirt.

Rod PuppetIb329 a-d

Three-dimensional male humanoid puppet: large head (part b) fits into body with skirt (part a), and a control rod (part d) with a long shaft that passes through the body and fits into the neck of the figure's head. The control rod (part c) from the figure's right arm has become detached. The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. Pale orange face, gold neck. Small black moustache, almond-shaped narrow eyes, narrow painted mouth. Headdress includes gelung supit urang, sumping, gold jamang, and Garuda Mungkur. Headdress black with gold, red, turquoise trim. Green and red painted necklace. Turquoise and red bracelets on upper arms and wrists. Hands at right angles to arms. Arms in two pieces attached with string at elbows and shoulders. String through palms to which sticks are attached. Wearing gold cross-over bodice, black apron with red fringe, silver and gold trim. Long gold belt hanging loose. Dark red cotton skirt. Head moves through 360 degrees.

Drum863/5 a-c

Cylindrical-like shaped wood drum (part a) carved in the form of a sea lion with a wolf-like head, a long body, shallow carved and painted front flippers and a triangular shaped end consisting of two hind flippers formed together with a rectangular tail in between. The head has a long protruding snout with carved eyes, nostrils and bared teeth. The drum is painted black, red and green with Northwest Coast stylized designs. Parts b-c are the stand for the drum. Each is a rectangular unpainted wooden block with a shallow rectangular indentation for holding the body of the drum.

Model Canoe1283/19

Model canoe with central mast. There are two figures, one standing and one seated. The seated figure is holding a paddle and has a bailer at his feet. Decoration on outer walls of the canoe are in red and black; figures are decorated in brown, red, black,and green. Repaired.

Sago Storage PotIe502 a-b

Pot made of clay with a face just below the flared rim and a grass ring (part b) that fits around the base of the pot. The face has raised circular eyes, a ridge around the eyes, and a recurved nose. A series of bean-like shapes in white, black and yellow surround the face with a brown background, a raised black wavy line border, and a series of emanating fin-like shapes in black and white outside the raised line.

Part (a) is a long tear drop shaped plywood with three dimensional carved wood head attached centre front. Face has eyes outlined in red seeds, hook nose with open nostrils and long feather and fibre rope through wide indented mouth. Back board and head painted with geometric designs in brown, gold, white and black. White feathers double fringe attach to perimeter with twisted fibre band. Secondary face on board has wide smiling mouth. Attached black and white feather, red seed medallion top piece, back has support material of hat and ridge in wood. Four flat wood leaf shapes (b-e) with black and white zigzag markings, cut white feather surrounds them, attached at an angle to a stick bound with fibre and white feather down.

Bentwood chest with lid (part b). Painted distributive designs on all four sides, split symmetry on long sides. Heavy black formlines with red and black details. Complex designs on front and back; one short side has wide curving black bands with red outlined ovoids, split u's and a round eye shape; cross-hatched details. Other short side has wide curving black bands, a red circle shape to right, red split u's, ovoids and crosshatched details. Two drilled holes at top of each long side. Box lashed at one corner; metal patch nailed with square nails at top. Lid is thick and carved from a single piece of wood; rounded edges.

Large round-body, part (a), is light coloured wood with two small protruding handles pierced, with leather handle strap going through them and attaching to wider leather strap. Extra piece of leather connected to side of leather strap. Mouth of container is wrapped and woven with grasses. Lid, part (b) is bulbous with round and smaller flat top, does not fit well on container. Inside container is charred black.
