Rod PuppetIb352 a-c

Three-dimensional humanoid puppet: the large head (part b) fits into a body clothed in a green patterned shirt and purple and green plaid skirt (part a), and a control rod (part c) with a long shaft that passes through the body and fits into the neck of the figure's head. The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. The figure has a blue face, neck and hands. The figure has light blue bulging eyes and a large bulbous nose. Lower tooth row is visible; upper and lower fangs present at each corner of mouth, between red lips. Human hair nailed in small bunches to head; bump at base of skull at rear. Torso unpainted under shirt; upper arms made of twisted cloth rope, lower arms and simple outstretched hands of wood. Head movement controlled by removable rod extending though body to handle beneath skirt.

Mask depicting Bita Sanniya (?): a humanoid face with bulging red-rimmed eyes, a short nose with a curved bridge, grimacing red lips with crooked white teeth, two red curved lines on either side of the mouth, brown plant fibre tufts on the brow as well as the upper lip, and strands of black hair on the chin. There is a strip of white fabric strung through two holes in the sides of the mask. A label on the reverse reads, "Bita Sanni" handwritten in blue pen.

Three-dimensional male humanoid puppet: large head (part b) fits into body dressed in a shirt and skirt (part a), and a control rod (part d) with a long shaft that has been wrapped in pink sythetic twine, secured by resin ?, and the rod passes through the body into the neck of the figure's head. The figure has an off-white bag (part c) with an inscription in blue ink on one side, and what appears to be a representation of a domino on the reverse, also in blue ink. The body has jointed yellow arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. The figure is wearing an elaborate headdress with many elements: diadem, stylized bird with mouth open at rear, ear ornamentation. Face red with large eyes positioned directly ahead, and yellow neck. Beard and moustache painted on, and long black hair. Teeth protruding from upper jaw; fangs projecting from sides of mouth. Clothed in a black tunic shirt with white strip at the front. Orange sash over shoulder down back and front to waist. Orange material around hips; variegated blue band overlapping. Batik skirt of brown with dark blue and beige markings.

Humanoid shadow puppet figure with handle extending down from feet and split on either side, attached with string. Skin is perforated to hilight linear detail. Head in profile and body in three-quarter view, standing on one foot with other knee raised. Arms oriented with elbows out and hands held with fingers loosely curled, palms up in front of chest. Head is green, large, and round with upturned eyes. Tusks on top and bottom at outer corner of mouth; one large tusk at front. Mouth is red; tusks white, fleshy nose. Body is tan with black perforated lines marking legs, genitals, protruding stomach.

Moveable head attached to rod which extends through torso. Face positioned forward with large eyes cast ahead; moustache and small beard painted on surface, upper teeth exposed. Neck and torso painted gold, green design painted on chest. Arms jointed at elbow attached with string; support stick tied to hand to right, one to left missing. Arm ornaments, hand bent outwards. Long blue skirt.

A two-dimensional male figure puppet with a one-piece wood body carved in low relief. Unpainted wood handle extends below the foot on the left. Leather arms are jointed at the shoulders and the elbows. Wood sticks are attached to the palms to manipulate the arms. Profile body and face are looking to the right. The light red face has a large protruding nose, short hair, moustache, and dark red ring beard. The upper teeth are visible. Wearing a yellow military cap with a black visor, a high-collared yellow uniform, and tasseled epaulette on the left with a light red belt. Pronounced posterior and a long black sword is worn from the hip on the left. The straight legs spread considerably. Red ground is between the black shoes. The hands are bent with a hooked thumb and a protrusion from the finger. Front and back of the figure are identical.

Costumed cloth hand puppet with carved and painted wooden head, hands and feet. Represents character of Bearded male (aggressive, with Daoist headgear and magical powers), Golden Rays style. Varnished two-toned pink face with black, white and red details. Gold crown with green and red, hair painted black with green/yellow detail, black hair beard attached in channel at chin, some missing on right side, two moustache tuffs. Body (part a) is undyed cotton flaps, attached around head, with attached pink hands with holes through sideways, partially stuffed with paper, stuffed grey cotton legs, white and green soled black boots. Pasted and stitched white silk robe (part b) with yellow and orange silk borders trimmed in pink, blue and whitish fur. Rows of silver, pink, and green sequins cover white silk. Red and silver foil wrapped thread, sequins on yellow silk, gold wrapped thread edging orange silk, with plastic sequin flowers and tin edged mirrors. Back and front centre, dragon-like figure, stuffed, covered in gold foil wrapped thread and trimmed in pink fur. Orange silk strip inside front side edge. Costume detachable, string tie at neck. Missing sequins, mirrors, torn at back where sleeves meet centre. Faint purple characters inside front bottom of costume at left, at back inside bottom centre and on back puppet flap.
