Hand PuppetIa61 a-b

Male character in Daoist robe, Golden Rays style. Costumed, cloth hand puppet with carved, painted wooden head, hands, and feet. Forehead is green, back of head and eye areas are white, face and neck are pink, bird headdress is brown with black outlines suggesting feathers, red mouth is wide open, red dots on cheeks. Tan dyed hair, glued across top of head. Body (part a) is undyed cotton flaps, attaching around head, with attached white/cream hands with holes through sideways, partially stuffed with paper, stuffed legs, white and green soled black boots. Pasted and stitched blue silk, cotton lined robe (part b); sleeves pink/orange with orange borders and collar; blue, white, yellow and pink fur trim. Flower-like decorations, in foil wrapped thread, plastic sequins and tin edged mirrors. Yellow and white brocade trim at centre, backed with character printed paper. Costume is detachable, tied with cord at neck.

Costumed cloth hand puppet with carved, painted wooden head, hands and feet. Represents character of Old Male (aggressive, with Daoist headgear and magical powers), Golden Rays style. Varnished white face, pink cheeks, yellow hair, gold, green and red crown. Black, yellow and red details on face. Yellow dyed hair beard attached at slits in chin. Body (part a), undyed cotton flaps, attached around head, attached white hands with holes through sideways, partially stuffed with paper, stuffed legs of pink and yellow patterned cotton, attached white and blue-green soled black boots. Pasted and stitched green silk robe (part b), orange and red silk border, green silk at front side edges, also inside front. Decorations include blue tin edged mirrors, red and green plastic sequins, white and pink fur trim. Centre front and back design of dragon in multiple rows of silver foil wrapped thread, pink plastic 'pearl' eyes, red and blue cord. Wrapped thread circle to upper left of centre. Detachable robe attached with cord at neck. Legible purple characters in oval on puppet flap.

Three-dimensional male humanoid puppet: large head (part b) fits into body clothed in skirt and jacket (part a), and a control rod with a long shaft passes through the body and fits into the neck of the figure's head (currently jammed partially in the torso. The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. The figure has a bright red painted face, and large eyes with white irises and black pupils. Black painted beard, moustache, and eyebrows. Neck painted light pink. Beige cap with black brim. White teeth with downward pointing fang. Black painted hair at rear. Unpainted, elongated hands. Off-white jacket with painted dark grey spots and grey-red cuffs. Red collar and band sewn to chest at front. Long skirt in off-white, light grey, and dark grey batik pattern.

Three-dimensional male humanoid puppet: large head (part b) fits into body with skirt (part a), and a control rod (part c) with a long shaft passes through the body and fits into the neck of the figure's head. The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. Body is painted off-white with red details on piceps, at wrists, and on each slightly rounded claw-like hands. Pink face, slightly downturned with elongated eyes and narrow red mouth. Facial features and moustache painted in black. There is a band of grey-brown fabric adhered around the neck. Shrimp's-tongue style headdress with Garuda Mungkur (short-tongued). Elaborate jamang and upper and lower sumping. Ngore stretches up rear of headdress to Garuda Mungkur. Headdress painted red, green, gold, white and pink. Brown-green, off-white, and yellow batik skirt.

Three-dimensional male puppet: large head (part b) fits into body with skirt (part a), and a control rod (part c) with a long shaft passes through the body and fits into the neck of the figure's head. The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. Head bears gold crown with long sumping over black curly hair. Above protruding siyang jawi is a Garuda Mungkur with long utah-utah. Skin on body painted gold; face, with narrow slit eyes, short wide nose, small band small black moustache extending past mouth, is painted red. Dimunitive beard on chin joined to sideburns below each ear, decorated with six lines extending from a point. Large half-flower diadem lies on the headdress above the forehead. Torso painted gold and decorated with a green triangle on chest underlined with red. Long arms, attached with string at the shoulders, have bird-type ornaments on upper arm and wrist; ornament to to left is green, to right blue with yellow and green pattern. The cotton skirt is batiked in gold, purple and black.

Three-dimensional male puppet (Petruk): large head (part b) fits into body with skirt (part a), and a control rod (part c) with a long shaft passes through the body and fits into the neck of the figure's head. The body has jointed arms, each with a long, black controlling rod attached. Carved wooden head has a pink face with black hair. A hump lies at the rear base of the skull. Face has exaggerated features, notably a long, bulbous nose inclined upward, and large bulging eyes with red irises. Red lips surround the wide, grimacing mouth, with a single wide tooth protruding from the middle of the top lip. Eyebrows are black and heavy. A small black moustache with a central triangular beard below the mouth joined to similar triangles of beard below the corners of the mouth. Thin, curling sideburns are found beside the ears decorated with four lines extending from a point. Cheeks, chin and forehead protrude. Lines below eyes, with stylized frown-lines between. The torso is dressed in a long-sleeved black cloth jacket with an upright collar, decorated at the back with 19 red and gold sequins. Chest has pattern of 27 red and gold sequins with zigzag gold braid. The pink wooden hands are outstretched, with thumbs inclined away from fingers. The skirt is of dark blue and green plaid cotton (with several small and one substantial- 2 cm- holes).

Mask depicting a humanoid face (sanni demon mask), pink with black painted hair as well as black on the end of the nose, and at the jaw. Painted black hair and eyebrows. The mask also has slightly protruding eyes with black rims, and a crescent-shaped hole underneath each eye. White plastic teeth and two outwardly curved fangs emerge from under a fur moustache, and the bottom teeth are attached to a plastic bottom lip, which is sewn to a black knit beard. Reverse has a label, which reads, " 'Bada' stomach sanni"; number "650". A strap, composed partly of twined plant fibre and partly cotton string, is attached at the back.

Mask depicting Demala Sanniya (which represents hallucinations and bad dreams, or madness and distortion of the body) with a brown-grey face, a twisted pink and red turban in relief. There are three horizontal red stripes at centre of forehead. The mask also has black arched eyebrows, bulbous eyes that each have a crescent-shaped slit below them, wrinkled cheeks and red flared nostrils. There is a hole in each ear through which has been threaded dark brown thread. The mouth is open, with red lips, and teeth painted white with black lines. There are holes above the upper lip and along the jaw chin with remnants of hair-like fibres in them. Label on reverse reads, "DEMALA SANNI: Hallucinations, bad dreams," and has "15" written in pencil. Underneath this label is a label fragment that reads, "hallucinations" that has been handwritten in blue ink.

Mask depicting Bihiri Sanniya (who represents deafness) with a dark green and black face, black eyebrows, bulging eyes with red rims and a crescent-shaped slit under each, a wide nose, simplified ears with pointed lobes, and pursed red lips. A cobra sits atop the centre of the head with its hood extended and its tail curving down beside the mask's right ear. There is a small hole drilled below each ear. A typewritten label on the reverse reads, "BIHIRI SANNI: Deafness," and "14" handwritten in blue ink. A metal eye hook is inserted on the reverse at the top centre.

Mask depicting Kola Sanniya (representing pneumonia) with a humanoid face that has been painted green with red lips, off-white teeth and fangs, an articulated jaw, protruding conical eyes with rounded tips, a bulbous nose with flared nostrils, scrolling yellow protrusions that emerge from above the eyes, and an off-white, grey, black, and red cobra emerging from between the eyes. There is a crescent-shaped slit under each eye. A long hair moustache is inserted into holes above the upper lip, and a black plant fibre beard attached to strip of rubber nailed to lower jaw, which is hinged with thread. A twined plant fibre cord runs across the back and is tied through holes on either side of the mask. The reverse has paper label with typed text that reads, "Kola Sanni, the leader of the '18' " and "33," handwritten.
