Stone in Sacred Place3544/3

Painting on a piece of arches paper, in horizontal orientation; depicts two echidnas and a turtle. Painting background is a mix of dark pink and black; the two echidnas are in the top right corner, the turtle spans the bottom half of the painting and there is a large yellow stone in the top left corner. The echidnas have circular heads, with long beaks and short, white forked tongues. Their backs are curved with white spikes along them; their four legs and triangular tails are all angled backwards. Bodies are decorated with rectangles filled with cross-hatching; done in maroon, white and dark yellow. Lines dividing rectangles are white. The larger echidna, towards the top edge, has additional line and square motifs throughout; small echidna has a thin yellow band. Both have lines and ovals through their centres. The turtle has its head tilted upward, toward the small echidna. Front legs of turtle are spread to either side, back legs are straight; tail is curved to the side. The body of the turtle has the same decorations as the echidnas. Additional square and "X" motifs along feet, neck and back. There are white lines, depicting movement, around the head of the turtle and the back of the small echidna. Back of painting has a stamp on it; pen inscriptions underneath.

Njaljod (The Rainbow Serpent)3544/2

Painting on a rectangular piece of slightly warped bark; depicts Njaljod (the Rainbow Serpent). Painting background is orange-red and the undulating serpent spans the entire width. Serpent has a thick body that narrows at the neck and tail, an oval-shaped head with an open mouth, and two small circular eyes. A long, white forked tongue extends from mouth, into bottom right corner of painting. Body of serpent is decorated with chevrons filled with cross-hatched bands; bands are dark yellow, maroon, black, and white. Lines dividing chevrons are maroon and decorated with alternating black and white dots. White bands run along curves of serpent, with maroon diagonal lines spaced throughout. White flowers extend from the bottom and top of serpent, at the centre of the painting. Wooden rods are tied to either side of painting, with plant fibre ties. Back of painting is undecorated; inscriptions written throughout and a paper label is adhered to centre. (Metal hanging hardware along top edge).

Rainbow Serpent3544/4

Painting on a piece of arches paper, in horizontal orientation; depicts the Rainbow Serpent with humanoid figures throughout. Painting background is orange-brown and the undulating serpent spans the entire width. Serpent has a thick body that narrows at the neck and pointed tail, a white oval-shaped head with an open mouth, and a red circular eye. A long, white forked tongue extends from mouth and rests above a seated humanoid figure. Body of serpent is decorated with rectangles filled with diagonal cross-hatched bands; bands are yellow, white, red and black. Lines dividing rectangles are white; serpent's body is outlined in black with white ovals at intervals throughout. Three additional humanoid figures are in the painting, in between the curves of the serpent's body. To the left of the serpent is a large white fish; body is decorated with diagonal bands filled with cross-hatching. White plants along edges of painting, along with three ovals. Back of painting is undecorated; pencil inscriptions and blind-embossed stamp in top left corner.

Brolga Feeding3544/7

Painting on a piece of arches paper, in vertical orientation; depicts a brolga. Painting background is dark brown, that lightens to yellow-brown in centre; the bird spans the entire height and width of the painting. Brolga has its long legs stretched in front of it, resting on its tail, with its neck bent over a plant. Bird has a black oval-shaped head, with yellow eyes, and a long beak; neck is black with wide white stripes throughout, outlined in yellow. Lower section of legs are black with a vertical yellow stripe running through the middle. Upper section of leg is decorated like body. Bird has an oval-shaped body with a protruding semi-circular chest and semi-circular tail. Chest is black; tail is black and decorated with white diagonal lines. Body is decorated with rectangles filled with cross-hatching; rectangles are black, cross-hatching done in maroon, yellow and white. Lines dividing rectangles are white. Long black stripes run down back of bird; outer stripe has a yellow line through the centre, inner stripe has wide white bands. The plant the brolga is feeding from consists of a black circle with wavy black and white lines extending from the top, and dotted lines from the bottom; dots are yellow, white and black. Back of painting has a stamp on it; pencil inscriptions underneath.

Yurlungurr (The Great Snake)3544/1

Painting on a long, thin and rectangular piece of slightly warped bark; depicts Yurlungurr (the Great Snake). Painting background is maroon with sections of black and dark yellow; maroon is covered in white dots. Main design consists of two large, curled serpents in centre of painting. Snakes have thick bodies that taper at white, oval-shaped heads and pointed tails. Short, white forked tongues extend from mouths; both have maroon circular eyes. Bodies are decorated with diagonal bands filled with cross-hatching; bands are maroon, white and dark yellow. Snake bodies are outlined in maroon with white dots throughout. Neck of top snake is dark yellow, bottom snake has a black neck. The space surrounding the top snake is black, space around bottom snake is dark yellow. Throughout painting background there are large semi-circles, fan palms, and animals. All background decorations are done in maroon, black, white and dark yellow; cross-hatching and dot motifs throughout. Back of painting is undecorated; paper label is adhered to centre.

Two Cranes3544/5

Painting on a piece of paper, in horizontal orientation; depicts two cranes crouching over a nest. Painting background is dark brown, that lightens to yellow-brown and red-brown in the centre. The birds are facing one another and have their necks intertwined. Both have their long legs stretched out in front of them, with their tails sticking out at an angle. Birds have black oval-shaped heads, with white eyes and long beaks; bird on right has a black plume on its head. The necks are black and decorated with plain white lines; identical decorations on their legs. Birds have oval-shaped bodies with protruding semi-circular chests and rectangle-like tails. Chests and tails are black and decorated with white lines. Bodies are decorated with diamonds and triangles filled with cross-hatching; designs done in maroon, dark yellow, black and white. Long black stripes run down backs of birds; lines with diamonds run down centres of bodies. Nest consists of white horizontal lines with two white eggs in the centre, outlined in maroon. Back of painting has a stamp on it; pencil inscriptions underneath.

Two Barra3544/6

Painting on a piece of paper, in horizontal orientation; depicts two barramundi (barra) fish and plants. Painting background is dark brown, that lightens to yellow-brown and red-brown in the centre. The fish span the width of the painting and are swimming next to one another. Both have triangular heads, flared tails and oval-like bodies, that widen at the neck. They have two pear-shaped fins, close to the head, and semi-circular fins near the tail; both have spiny dorsal fins. The head, tail, pear-shaped fins and dorsal fins are maroon, outlined in white. Semi-circular fins are decorated with diagonal lines; bands of cross-hatching across body. Additional dots and line motifs throughout body. All decorations are done in white and yellow. There is a large yellow bulb in the bottom right corner, with roots. Leaves and flowers extend from it, stretching towards all corners of painting. Back of painting has a stamp on it; pencil inscriptions underneath.

Ikutaujuk Surprises the Kayakers3524/3

Stonecut print of two kayaking men. The men have dark hair and are wearing hooded parkas. Both are using double-bladed paddles and have three black bundles on the back of their kayaks. A man-like monster is swimming under the water, on the left side of the print, and pointing up at one of the kayakers. He has long hair and is wearing a long-sleeved shirt, pants and tall boots. On the shoreline, a woman is depicted exiting a light yellow-brown tent. She is wearing a hooded, long-tailed parka and tall boots; she is holding a pouch(?). In front of her tent is a fire pit with a pot over it; jagged clouds of black smoke(?) surround it. A large bird is flying along the right side of the print. Water is dark brown-black with white dashes throughout; shoreline is dark red-purple with white spots throughout. Along the bottom edge of the print the edition number, a syllabic inscription and date are written in pencil. Diamond-shaped blind-embossed stamp in bottom left corner.

Summer Tent of Old3524/1

Stonecut print of four people dragging three seals into a tent. Figures are all wearing hooded parkas, trimmed with fur, and tall boots. Figure in front centre is bent over and holding a rope, attached to a seal, and figure on left is holding an ulu knife. Tent consists of dark yellow and black sealskins stitched together; circle of black rocks around base. Two lines extend from either side of tent, supported by central poles of tent and separate ones staked into ground outside. Dark red skins are hung over the lines and poles; harpoons lean against the side of the tent. Along the bottom edge of the print the title, technique, edition number, place made, date and artist signature are written in pencil. Signatures, in syllabics, with Cape Dorset Co-operative Symbol stamped in bottom right corner.
