Canoe BailerNb580

Small canoe bailer made of cedar bark with wooden handle. Outer bark on exterior surface, but removed from ends which are pleated and tied to the wooden handle. The ends are secured with white cotton string which has been covered over with red cherry bark. An off-white coloured plant material, possibly yellow cedar bark, has been wrapped loosely around the length of the handle in the manner of a decoration. Small wooden splints have been inserted between the inner and outer bark, two on each side, to keep the edges straight.

Dress made from large pieces of hide with black, white, dark blue, yellow, light blue and pink beadwork. Large blue beads hanging on strands across the chest and back with one strand of large yellow beads. Red and dark blue fabric motifs at the hem of the dress on either side, and at the centre of the skirt. The hem is also decorated with a band of dark blue beading above which are evenly-spaced squares of red fabric with two hide strands emerging from each. Hide fringes at hem, sides and cuffs.

Rectangular coiled cedar root basket (part a) with an attached lid (part b). Body of basket (part a) is completely covered in imbrication, primarily canary grass background with red cherry bark vertical design elements. Lid (part b) has four rows of imbrication along the edges, same as the body except for some black dyed cherry bark elements. Lid is hinged along one side with cotton string which is sewn into the body of the basket. A small cotton string loop is attached to the top of the lid on the opposite side. The initials A. H. are present on the bottom of the basket in black ink(?).

Coiled cedar root cradle with parallel slat base and wall construction. Overcast rim with cedar root bundle foundation. Two small loops have been attached to the proximal end and one on each side at near the distal end. Light coloured grass beading on the proximal end and along one side, interrupted with red and black cherry bark at regular intervals. Vertical design panels on both sides in alternating black and white or red and white combinations. Rawhide carrying straps extend across the cradle at the top and the bottom. These straps are sewn into the sides of the cradle. An opening is located in the distal end.
