Pants3132/2 b

Baggy shalvaar style pants, worn with a long tunic (part a), and veil or shawl (part c), as part of a wedding ensemble. Pants are made of wild tussar silk in a light orange-brown colour and have a wide waist band, with pull-string that ties at the front. Legs are pleated at top front, loose through the thigh and tapering toward the ankle, where hem is stitched five times. The garment is otherwise undecorated. Interior is lined with silk fabric in a course weave.

Garment3132/2 a

Long tunic (kameez) worn over pants with a veil, as part of a wedding ensemble (3132/2 b-c). Shirt has long narrow sleeves, a slightly scooped neck, and a front opening that fastens with hooks. Garment is made of wild tussar silk in a light orange-brown colour. It is hand embroidered the length of the front opening on both sides, and around the wrists and front of the neck, along with cording of metallic thread. Images include standing birds, elephants with tusks and long tails, and human figures with arms spread, in gold metallic thread, round wooden beads, and tubular glass and metal beads. The back is undecorated; the interior is lined with panels of silk in a course weave.

Embroidered boy's shirt. Long-sleeved, collared shirt is made of mashru cloth, a mix of cotton and silk, coloured in vertical stripes of red, yellow, green and black with sets of small white dots regularly scattered across the red. Chest and back are heavily embroidered with flowers, mango tree designs, and 'v' shaped animal horns. Small mirrors are inset on chest, back and around cuffs, surrounded by sickle stitching. A decorative gold metal button fastens the shirt at the collar, with a plastic button at waist. Two ties on the interior also help hold the garment closed.

Head Scarf3132/3

Lightweight cotton man's headscarf, in a lilac colour. The garment is nearly square, with three lines of embroidery set in from the edges, around all sides. Inside the lines at one corner sits a small design of flower and foliage. All embroidery is done in green, yellow and red. A light grey makers stamp sits on one corner.

Warrior Charm3084/1

Body adornment (karawut) woven of bark and fibre. The object is coloured with ochre, charcoal and lime, and takes a basic human shape with head at top, protruding nose running down the length of the face, large open eyes, and open mouth below nose. At bottom are two thin legs with dangling cowrie shells as feet. The chest is thickly padded. Lines of cowrie shells are sewn onto the torso and upper legs, and boar tusks, two per side, are attached along the midpoint edges. At back, a short loop of fibre is attached at mid-upper shoulder.

Shadow puppet of the main character Karagöz, made of semi-transparent animal skin and a watery paint. The puppet is a bearded man with an elaborate hat holding a flower at top, a collared shirt, short pants and pointed shoes. Arms are raised to chest level, hands clenched. The puppet’s legs and lower body are separate pieces and attached with string ties to create movement. The skin of the object is punctured to show division between the clothing and limbs, and for decoration.

Puppet depicting a dragon. Creature is separated into four parts attached to each other by plastic ties. Three small wings are attached to either side of the shoulder, and the lower legs and tail are attached to the torso near the hip. The dragon’s forked tongue emerges from a sharp toothed mouth and its front leg is raised, showing long claws. It stands upright on its large, clawed back feet, with its pointed tail raised. The skin of the object is punctured to show division between the limbs and for decoration.

Shadow puppet of the hunchback character Bekeruhi, made of semi-transparent animal skin and a watery paint. The man wears a tall rounded hat with brim, striped in green, blue, yellow and red, as well as an open jacket above a green shirt, wide legged dark pants and red shoes. His face has a long pointed nose, prominent round chin, open mouth and large downturned eye. The hump on his back is prominent. The legs below the knees are separate from the body and attached with small string ties in order to create movement. The skin of the object is punctured to delineate lines in the clothing and divisions between his limbs.
