Fire Kit2878/28 a-d

Fire starting kit consisting of four components. Part a: Two caps on the either end of a small rope which attach to either end of a bamboo stalk (part b). These caps come from a single silk worm cocoon that has been cut in half. There is a flat, rectangular piece of iron that is used with a flint (part d) attached to the length of rope. The iron is curved into a hook-shape on one corner in order to allow the iron to hang off the piece of rope. Part b: Length of bamboo stalk, hollow at one end to allow for the storage of parts c-d, inside there is a bundle off-white un-spun silk fibre. The closed end of the bamboo stalk is burnt and blackened. This end is the carbonated end used to light a dried silk tuft to ignite a fire. Part c: A tobacco leaf rolled up and bent at one end. Part d: Piece of stone used as a flint. It is mostly black with streaks of brown and there is a brown line that runs down the centre of the stone. The edges are mostly jagged, but there is one smooth edge.

Pot Hanger2878/26

Brown knotted-rope pot hanger. At one end of the rope the fibre has been wrapped into a circular shape. The circular shape has 4 four separate ropes and the rest of the ropes are knotted around the circle to keep it in place. There are 10 ropes coming out of the circle. The ropes are grouped together in twos as the ropes leave the circle. Each group of ropes is knotted twice together. The second knot is tied by taking one rope from one group and another rope from a second group and then they are tied together into a new knot. Chadri Shawl2878/20

Large, black women's shawl, or veil, with a rectangular embroidery panel centred along the straight edge (when worn this panel falls around the head/face of the wearer). There are four main sections to the design of the panel which are separated by gold stitching: the section closest to the outer edge is two lines of red and green cotton; the largest section of design has light orange, green and red cotton sewn into the embroidery, the main pattern of which consists of gold diamond and rectangular shapes; on the outer edge of the four sections there are triangle and arrow shapes. On the interior of the semi-circular shawl, around the top, there is a small piece of cotton material with a blue background and red and green flowers, sewn as a lining where the shawl would rest on top of the wearer's head. The inside edges of the shawl are also lined: the front seams are lined with a narrow strip of red fabric, and the bottom seams are lined with a narrow strip of blue fabric. On the exterior surface of the shawl, extending out from the central embroidery panel, there is a hand-sewn geometric design consisting of three V-shaped sets of linear patterns. Each of these is a different colour (from closest to the embroidery panel out: light blue, light orange and light yellow). All three consist of two lines and there are flower-like designs sewn on the outside edge of each of the lines. The yellow lines, which are the closest to the bottom of the shawl, have two snail shell designs that extend down from the two main lines.
