Rod PuppetIb279 a-c

Indonesian hand puppet; carved upper body (part a), extending to a wooden handle. Forward extending head (part b) with white face and upturned red eyes; mouth cast in a dissatisfied expression. Black highlighted facial features, hints of chin , beard, and sideburns. Head wrapped with a spiraling wound turban -songkok- of alternating dark and light green with gold tassels. Jointed arm on the right painted pink and is narrow, thicker arm to the left is unpainted. Both arms attached to supporting sticks with string. Figure wears a soiled light blue blouse overlying a red and white checkered body covering. Waist and legs wrapped in a skirt printed with a pattern of black and cream. Both blouse and skirt are made of synthetic material. Paint slightly chipped and peeling on turban. Pointed single controlling rod (part c).

Male body (part a) composed of carved wood and fabrics; body unpainted and somewhat plain. Articulate arms jointed at the elbow and wrist are supported by sticks attached at the hand. Arm bracers, painted red, decorate the figure's wrists. Monkey-shaped face (part b) coloured pink; hair black under a red fez-shaped hat. The puppet wears a black long sleeved jacket which is soiled; a brown batiked skirt is wrapped about its waist and secured. Pointed controlling rod (part c).

Three-dimensional male humanoid puppet: large head (part b) fits into body with skirt (part a) from which the figure's right arm (part d) has become detached, and a control rod (part c) with six notches on the handle and a long shaft that passes through the body and fits into the neck of the figure's head. The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. Red face, bulging eyes with blue irises, black moustache, short beard, large blunt nose, upper teeth visible with two very small fangs. Black cap with blue and gold looped ornament; red and blue sekar kluwih headdress with gold sumping, blue and red Garuda Mungkur with short gold tongue, several gold and red badong. Black curly hair decorated with white, showing below headdress. Gold neck. Head detachable and joined to body by controlling rod which extends through body, marked with finger grips. Gold slender torso. Gold arms; red and blue necklace; arm on left articulated at elbow by string but unattached at shoulder and has red, white, and blue upper arm and wrist ornaments. Arm on right articulated at shoulder and elbow by string and has blue and red upper arm and wrist ornaments. Hands with fingers straight and at right angles to arms. Yellow and brown batik skirt.

Three-dimensional male humanoid puppet: large head (part b) fits into body with skirt (part a), and a control rod (part c) with a long shaft that passes through the body and fits into the neck of the figure's head. The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. Red face, bulging eyes with green irises, black moustache, beard and sideburns, blunt protruding nose, white and gold upper teeth slightly protruding. Green and white striped turban, gold sumping, white Garuda Mungkur with short red tongue. Black curly hair decorated with gold appearing from back of headdress. Gold neck. Head detachable and joined to body by controlling rod. Pink rounded torso; swelling breasts; blue circles around breasts and navel. Breasts covered by black velvet yoke with appliqued seed beads; velvet worn and some beads missing. Yoke attached to chest and back with nails. Pink arms articulated at shoulder and elbow by string. Green and blue upper arm, and blue and red wrist ornaments. Hands at right angles to arms with fingers curled; attached by string to controlling wands. Blue, green, orange and yellow plaid skirt.

Three-dimensional male humanoid puppet: large head (part b) fits into body with skirt (part a), and a control rod (part c) with a long shaft that passes through the body and fits into the neck of the figure's head. The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. Head: forward gazing white face, black eyes, red lips, gold teeth, black moustache, sideburns and hair. Headdress: jamang-blue points outlined in red; gold, red and blue bands across bottom, blue and gold sumping. Garuda Mungkur mostly gold with blue and red trim, black line mouth, gold and red eye, red tongue. Clothing: dark blue tutupan, gold pattern on cuff, white breast piece, blue swatches over each breast held by three gold beads on right and two broken beads on left. Red cloth at throat, epaulettes in orange, red and blue. Two waistbands; top is green and black check with gold and black bands at bottom, lower waistband has floral design in blue, yellow, red and white. The figure is also wearing a light orange, off-white, dark orange and blue batik sarong. The hands are flat.

Shadow PuppetIb277

A carved flat wooden puppet with leather arms. The red face, in profile, has a blunt nose with a large eye that has a red iris. Protruding teeth are in the upper jaw while fangs are extending from both the upper and the lower jaw. Black hair. Headdress with diadem and ear ornament. Polychrome and gold-colouring are dominant throughout the figure which is accented by blue, red, green, and white. Intricate cut-out design on the skirt which is held on by string and wire. Moveable arms are jointed at the shoulders, elbows, and wrists. Sticks are attached to the hands for manipulation.

Red mouth and white fangs and teeth. Blue eyes. Moveable gold coloured arms; red and white bands at wrists and biceps. Black cloth bodice edged with gold beads. Two red sequin rosettes at bosom. Soiled and patched yellow cotton skirt; single green pattern sewn with yellow thread attached at waist. Hand on left broken; piece missing. Arms articulate; one to right cannot be fully extended. Pointed controlling rod with rounded sides (part c).

Wrinkles are rendered in black, and the figure's black hair is tied back with a white band. Clothing: blue tutupan attached with two nails, and a red, green and yellow sarong.

Headdress: cap, red star on white with red and gold bands at rim. Gold band appears to have a layer of green paint under it. Body: distended belly, rope protruding from neck. Clothing: light blue tutupan with green and black striped sleeves, red under-tunic, dark blue, natural and light brown batik sarong. Hands attached with cord to control rods. Puppet held by rod running through body and head.

The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. Figure has a pink face, arms and torso, wearing elaborate headdress and gathered skirt. Light blue staring eyes. Black moustache, red lips, big nose. Upper tooth row bared, upper and lower fangs present in both corners of mouth. Headdress composed of red cap with top knob, three-tiered gold crown with diadems in red, green and white, gold ear ornaments, Garuda Mungkur (mythical bird) mythical bird in white, light green, dark green and red. Ten black hair curls emerge from beneath crown. Green and red ornaments at wrists and upper arms. Long light brown and green batik skirt is gathered at waist. Arms jointed at shoulder and elbow. Arm control rods missing. Head movement controlled by removable rod, which extends from head to handle beneath skirt.
