Bird MaskK2.439

Mask surmounted by a bird and painted with dots and geometrics in natural ochre shades. The mask has downward pointing triangular cut out eyes, and is framed by a projecting three-ridged feature. There are small ear-like projections at the top sides of the lower face. The bird is frontal facing with a brown crest and is attached to the top of the mask at its feet. Paper label attached to interior.

A metal sword with a male head finial that has bulging eyes and a head piece which wraps around at the end of the handle. Underneath the head, there is a pattern of two protruding, four grooved, two protruding, and four grooved horizontal ridges along the cylindrical handle itself. The blade is incised with geometric patterns consisting of quadrangles with cross hatch marks within, wave-like curls, and dots, as well as a floral pattern with leaves.

Figure of a standing woman. The rounded eyes are oval, the long nose extends from the curved upraised brows and the mouth is oval. The hairstyle is elaborate and accentuated with grooved lines. The earrings consist of a red bead. There are two diagonal scarification marks on each cheek. More horizontal scarification marks are on the neck and the stomach. The thin breasts are pointed. The short arms are resting slightly bent at the elbows. There is a navel and a small garment for the lower portion of the body. On a circular base. Nailed to a separate square stand.

Standing wood figure (ibeji). Head is capped with a bright blue pigment on the conical headdress. Cap is decorated with diagonal ridges. Seven tribal scarification marks on the cheeks, four of which are horizontal while the other three are vertically above the horizontal. Extended arms have hands touching thighs. Has very short legs in relation to body and the feet are large. Stands on circular pedestal. Beads around neck and hips. Covered with red camwood paste.

The neck tapers to angled shoulders with the arms resting bent at the elbows so that the hands are curved inward at the front. The figure is sitting in a crouched position.
