Jewelry BoxCh213 a-l

Yellow earthenware jewelry box (part a) in the form of an escritoire, with two long lower drawers (parts b-c), and 9 smaller ones above (parts d-l). Painted with purple-red scenes of buildings and trees in black framed, rectangular, white reserves on upper and lower sides and drawer fronts. Each drawer opens and has a knob handle.

Standing figure with flat, square base. Figure's feet are at right angles and sideways one is raised up with only toes touching the base. It has one arm at a right angle and pointing forward with hand palm down; other arm is pulled behind head with hand in a fist. Hair in black and gold; wrap at waist and over shoulder in orange-red; necklace in gold.

Dance belt. Consists of central wooden plaque (part a), slightly concave, and two separate flat pieces that sit on the right (part b) and on the left (part c). Central portion is frontal face with clenched teeth and bulging eyes. Sides pieces are carved with serpent-like heads with protruding tongues, seen in profile. Pieces may originally have been joined with cloth strips. Metal loops on the back of each panel for hanging.

Loon Rattle2937/1

Rattle carved in the shape of a bird, with black paint used to show the wings, feathers, eyes and beak of a loon. The rattle was carved in two pieces, top and bottom, which are tied together in three places with string. The holes in the fourth spot are missing the string. The rattle is hollow and makes noise when moved.

Small cylindrical woven basket with dome-shaped, fitted lid (part b). One side depicts a whale with jaws open, chasing a canoe carrying two people; on the other side, the whale is swallowing them. Flying birds encircle a floral motif on the lid. Motifs are woven directly into the baskets with dyed grasses; inside this basket, protected from the light, the colours remain vibrant: pink, purple, red, orange, and green.

Wooden headdress consisting of a rectangular piece of wood with a semi-oval cut out of the centre bottom; painted in blue, yellow, green, black and red. The front has a flower in the centre and two feathers on each side. The back has clouds and lightning with two feathers on either side. The front has a circular bundle of fibre attached. There is a thick leather strip that attaches at the back and hangs down past the edge of the wood. A second piece of leather runs horizontally across the opening.
