Head RingA6136

Thick head band of strips of cedar bark bound on diagonal angles with fine twisted cedar bark string. Lower edge of the band bound with fine twine. Four bundles of shredded bark wrapped in a covering of woven cedar bark string tied around the top edge of the band. Additional panel of bark similar in construction to the main band attached on one side. Inside of the band lined with cotton cloth.

Carved wooden mask depicting Dzunuk'wa. The humanoid face has a protruding forehead, recessed closed eyes, flattened nose and pursed lips. The mask is painted black with orange eye sockets and red nostrils and lips. The hair is reddish brown and pegged in strands at top of head.

Crooked Beak MaskA3537

Carved wooden, crooked beak mask. The beak has large red, ovoid shaped nostrils outlined with a row of black and yellow u and split u forms running towards the eye. Running from the brow is a large central frill that protrudes outward and curves inward to the centre tip of the beak; detailed with black u-forms. The mouth is red, flat and protruding; bottom part of jaw is hinged with rectangular pieces of rubber. Inside of the beak is lined with a row of copper, u shaped teeth. The face is black with white detailing. The eyes are black and white, outlined in white and red on a white, ovoid shaped ground; brow is black. The underside of the beak is black with a white stylized design. The inside of the mask is hollow with the exception of twisted twine pieces through the lower beak to articulate the mask. Attached to the top is a wooden crest with red split u-forms on a white ground; small bundles of cedar line the edge of the crest. Along the bottom of the crest and side of the mask are thin twisted cedar braids. Hanging from the top and sides are long strips of cedar that would cover the wearer. Intertwined in the long pieces are a few feathers and eagle down. The mask is painted black, white, red and yellow with Northwest Coast stylized forms.

Mask with prominent black eyebrow ridges, inside grey coloured eye sockets, small cut-out black and white eyes, and a black, red, black, and white nose and mouth. Carved orange crescent shaped designs are on either side of the eyes. There are two split "u" designs sketched in pencil on one ear. Cord tied to several holes in back.

Xwixwi mask with protruding cylindrical eyes, hooked nose, and protruding recurved tongue. The mask is painted with green around the eyes, red nostrils, a red mouth and tongue, a black moustache, and thick black eyebrows. There is a scalloped border in black around the rim. An off-white cord is tied through three holes in the top reverse of the head and two holes either side of the face.

Mask with a hooked nose, pronounced orange mouth and round eyes below an overhanging brow. Split-U details in large flaring ears. Black horse hair is attached to the head. Grey with black and white details, red nostrils and gold around the eyes, between the eyes and along the top of the ears. Unpainted on the top with several nails and attached cords.

Mask (a) with white face and small circular eyes, black hair and thick black eyebrows with red between them. There is a red design at the top centre of the forehead, and there are two red semicircles at the temples. The nostrils and lips are also red. A tuft of feathers attached to a wooden stick with blue string and off-white fabric tape (b) fits into a hole in the top of the mask.

Fish MaskA6235

Mask representing a fish. The mask has a heavy brow, slightly protruding eyes, a curved nose with circular nostrils, a straight mouth and no chin. There is a cedar bark fringe attached in three bunches at the sides and top of the head with an off-white feather attached to the tuft on the mask's left side, and a longer fringe is attached at the top reverse. The mask is painted with silver around the eyes, a darker silver overall, black eyebrows and pupils, red nostrils and lips, each with an incised off-white border.
