Hat1949.205

Low truncated cone hat woven from spruce root and painted with a design in black, red and blue. The design painted on the crown of the hat is of an animal' s face with small eyes surrounded by blue, with a toothy mouth bordering the rim. the design on the rear is highly stylised, having two circular faces and many lines.; Good.Condition: Poor and in need of conservation. A large split in the spruce root runs horizontally across the crown and through the eye designs.

Spoon with curved bowl and pointed handle. The handle is roughly carved with a humanoid holding a creature and joining tongues. The style of carving is not particularly characteristic of Northwest Coast, possibly because it is not finished with the usual attention to detail (G.Crowther).; Good

Necklace of copper and shell beads strung on twined wool. The copper beads are long cylinder beads and are spaced by groups of short cylinder - disc beads of white dentalium shell. The necklace has been mounted on perspex due to its fragile nature.; Good.

A) Skin bag with a central strip of red and white quill decoration. The bag has a long cord attached made from plaited gut, with a blue, white and red woven end decoration. B) Similar bag to A) inside which it is kept. It has a central fringe of red cotton but no quill work.; Good. Additional description: A) Flattened, creased and slightly warped. Very fragile and brittle. A number of small holes over surface and a small circular repair on one side. Red edging at mouth of bag. Toggle at end of cord. B) Flattened, creased and slightly warped. Very fragile and brittle. Paler in colour than A. Red edging along top and sides. (J.Tanner, April 1998).

Mask1949.207

Carved wooden ceremonial mask with hands on either side of the head as flaps. The mask has painted eyebrows on a prominent forehead, round eyes, a prominent nose and chin. The mouth is down turned and pierced. A black design has been painted around the eyes, cheeks and chin. The wooden hands have interlocking fingers which conceal the face, and open by a system of strings. The palms of the hands have a stripped design painted in black.; Good
