Cantonese Opera FanN1.737 a

A shield-shaped fan made of cardboard with a heavy rolled edge of fabric supported by a wood socket and slat running up the centre back. The concave front has a main design consisting of a bird facing to its right on a peony tree among prunus motifs with turquoise, blue, black, pink, mauve, grey, and pale green bordered by tin reflectors, mirrors, on an ivory-coloured background. The top of the bird's head is blue, and the middle of its wings are purple. A golden bat is at the base with an attached deep pink tassel. The convex back has a printed rose design, 18th century style, on cotton.

A pair of flat-soled shoes with upturned toes made of rubber. Soles are off-white, and have raised wavy lines alternating with straight lines except under the arch. Arch has two large characters, one above the other, with four characters above, and four characters below. Shoes have low sides, and small heels. They are red on the outside, decorated with floral shapes in gold, one on each side of the heel, one on each side at the centre, and two on each side at the front, with a stylized Chinese(?) character in a raised circle between them. There is a narrow band of white at the top, a vertical white line at the centre front, and a white panel at the back with concave sides. Insoles are off-white, and the sides are pink on the inside. Insoles are stamped in red with an oval with haracters at the centre, and below, and words in English above. Below this, there is a round paper label printed in red, gold, and yellow. Below this, there is a rectangle stamped in blue with two numbers, and other marks. Below this is a rectangle stamped in green with three characters.

A pair of flat-soled shoes with upturned toes that have a vertical centre front seam. The shoes are covered on the outside with red silk brocade woven in repeating swastika patterns surrounded with lines following the directions of the swastika lines. The soles are black plastic embossed in a flower pattern except under the arch where there is script-like writing as there is on the slightly raised heel. The shoes are lined with pale blue-grey fabric and have tan insoles printed in gold with roman letters and an image of a dancing woman.

Rain Hat2503/5

A hat of brown paper pointed at top and with four sections projecting from centre folds. When opened flat, the hat is triangular with points truncated at the base. An extra layer of paper with a serrated upper edge is adhered to the lower edge of the hat with another serrated strip adhered to the bottom edge of hat. Faintly visible bat shapes cut out of brown paper are adhered over the midpoint of each fold. A red paper-cut is adhered to the top of the hat.

Open-top HatEd1.287

Cap of black silk damask with a flower and vines at the centre on each side, surrounded with a circle of five-petalled flowers, and with a smaller flower and vine motif on each side of the forehead. The cap is made of two halves joined at a centre seam from front to back, except for the opening at the top, round when worn. This opening and the forehead area are edged with narrow piping. The edge of the cap is straight across the forehead, but then is cut at a right angle so that it covers the ears. The lower edge forms a circle from the right angle to the top opening. The outer fabric is folded under at the ears and threaded on a cord. The cap is lined with blue-purple rayon damask with floral designs. A purple silk cord extends loosely across the top opening, attached at the centre front and back. At the back are suspended three purple tassels wrapped in silver thread. At the centre front is a complex knot design in purple cord, and five purple tassels. At each side above the right angle is attached a silver-coloured metal ornament in the shape of a basket of flowers. At the end of the back seam is attached an ornament of the same metal in the shape of a bat or cicada. Pieces of white paper are pasted to the inside at both sides, and inside the forehead area.

Official Emergency HatEd1.283

Official emergency hat with flat round brim attached to crown shaped like truncated cone. Inside of hat is made of paper painted black, with a woven texture showing. Outside of hat is covered with fine red silk, with edges trimmed with red paper, and with vertical strips of red paper on each side of the crown, at the bottom of which are small red tubes. On the underside of the brim from the tubes and strips are attached two red silk ribbons that are tied together. Crown of hat projects slightly below its point of insertion into the brim. Brim is somewhat wavy and has black and brown stains.
