Headdress1498/1

A woman’s headdress made from coarsely woven dark brown wool textile. Consisting of a headband and an attached narrow “tail” or streamer that hangs down the back. Lavishly decorated with cowrie shells, red, and white glass beads, buttons, and embroidery. The headband is embellished with two rows of cowrie shells separated by a row of red glass beads. The bottom edge of the headband is finished with multi-coloured embroidery resembling a braid. The “tail” is trimmed with many buttons, red, and white glass beads, and cowrie shells forming floral and geometric shapes. The bottom is fringed (about 13.5 cm) and the side edges are finished with red, blue, and yellow-green embroidery resembling a braid. The textile used to construct the headband is woven in plain weave while the streamer is made from warp yarns which have been braided and loosely woven together to form a fabric.

Woman's sleeveless, heavily ornamented vest, constructed from wide panels of red-orange jacquard ribbon and panels of black satin. The ribbon is pleated to conform to the curves of the armhole and around the inverted heart shaped neckline. Appliqued with several kinds of decorative silver, yellow, green and off-white braid; beaded with clear glass beads and coloured sequins; floral designs embroidered on back. Centre front opening has five silver filigree buttons. Lined with blue and white checked cotton. Embroidered floral medallions on inside back lining. All hand sewn.

Ceremonial Panel1559/1

Rectangular, embroidered, and appliquéd textile panel, decorated with square mirrors. Panel edged with closely-spaced cowrie shells on three sides; the top edge has three black fibre ties, evenly space along the edge. Bottom edge has three ‘tassels’ made of clusters of cowrie shells and metal beads (cylindrical and bell-shaped). Six large square mirrors and several small square mirrors, worked on a bright pink and orange background, and in the centre of the panel, are surrounded by a border of small square mirrors. The panel is lined with red and tan resist-dyed textile.

Hat873/7

Bonnet made of off-white jacquard-weave rayon, with a wide band of multi-coloured embroidered ribbon at front, extending from ear to ear. The front of the hat is decorated with a band of multicoloured floral patterned fabric and is beaded with clear glass, silver, gold and coloured glass beads and sequins. There is also a beaded medallion at the back of the crown. The front edge of the hat is trimmed with lace and two straps made of pink and blue striped moire ribbon ar attached at the sides. The lower back edge is gathered in with a drawstring. Lined with off-white cotton.

Small, square, embroidered textile, made of red cotton broadcloth, decorated with large, circular motifs and border designs. There are four large, circular geometric motifs arranged in a four-cell grid at the centre of the piece. Each of these motifs has eight “arms” in red, dark purple, mauve, green and orange, outlined in yellow. The cells of the grid are delineated with narrow, flat silver metallic braid with four small white buttons sewn where the grid lines meet the border. A meandering, multicoloured line forms a border around the central designs. The embroidery is worked in chain stitch. Flat silver braid is couched around all four edges, surrounded by two rows of red and blue glass beads. One yellow bead is sewn to one edge. The piece is lined with red and white paisley-printed cotton textile, pieced at one corner with black cotton textile.

Decorative Textile1440/2

V-shaped, multicoloured, embroidered, decorative band. The 2 “arms” of the band are decorated with a repeated, square, embroidered motif, perhaps representing a natural object, such as an animal, bird or plant. All motifs are identical to each other in design, but differ in colouration. At the inside edge of the V is a strip (13 mm) of multicoloured, slanted Greek key motifs which has been embroidered onto an open-weave textile, then appliquéd onto the piece; the outer edge is finished with a narrow strip of black cotton textile. The lower edge of the V is finished with green commercially-made fringe (14 cm). The piece is underlined with pastel striped cotton textile.

Shawl873/13

Woman's small rectangular shawl, with white centre surrounded on three sides by rows of black cut work embroidery and white lace, with black and white lace edging. The cut embroidery is backed with a scrap of bright pink cotton textile, and the white lace is backed by a pale green and pale blue moire ribbon, which have been loosely attached to the back of the shawl.

Men's dark blue wool tunic. The tunic has a standing collar and keyhole neckline with a plastic button and leather loop. The tunic hangs straight from the shoulders in front, back is slightly fitted above waist and is flared below the waist by means of triangular gores. There are bands of red and yellow wool, embroidery and rickrack of blue and green at collar, shoulders, neck opening, upper back, cuffs and bottom hem. The bands around the neckline overlap at the bottom. The inner collar is lined with brown, green and tan patterned cotton; the rest is unlined.

Four Winds Hat1128/1

Man's hat. Trimmed with a band of fur, bands of rickrack and appliqued fabric; multi-coloured fabric streamers at centre back. The dark blue four-pointed crown is edged in red. Lined with off-white, red and blue cotton flannelette. Points of the crown are stiffened with an unseen material (possibly the spines of large feathers?).
