A sticker on the back of the piece reads: " African Art... Durban South Africa." There are two evenly spaced holes at either end of the piece.

A light thin bamboo grass knife that is carved, and decorated with a tooth pattern edge along the handle which has a dark linear and zig zag pattern on a natural light-coloured background. The end of the handle has a simple finial. The straight blade comes to a sharp point.

Carved wooden neck rest with two-lobed base, two arching vertical supports, and a roughly rectangular top that curves slightly downwards towards the centre and has a band of zigzag pattern carved into each end. Underneath each end of the rectangular segment is a curved extension. The bottoms of the curved extensions, the ends of the top segment, and the arching vertical supports are all burnt ? to a dark brown finish.

Wooden model of a mortar (part a) and two pestles (parts b and c) for corn grinding. Burnt into the wood is a geometric design of diamonds around the rim and triangles around base of mortar, and each pestle has two bands burnt into them.

Thumb piano consisting of nine metal prongs attached to wooden base with a metal bar that has been secured with metal wire, and supported by a strip of metal sheeting. The sides of the thumb piano each have a raised wall that curves inwards, and the top and bottom ends curve outwards. There is a burnt design of triangles and lines on the bottom end, and of zig-zag lines on the side walls.

Cylindrical ring carved from wood that sits on one flattened side, and the edges are serrated with three segments of the edge burnt to a dark brown finish. Around the centre of the ring are two raised, diagonally ridged bands that are accented with two bands of dark brown burnt wood and these bands are crossed by two lines of dark brown at the top of the ring.

Axe with wooden handle that has a cylindrical shaft that flares to a triangular shape at the top where a dark brown parallelogram design and solid band at the bottom design have been burnt into the surface. The butt end of the handle has also been burnt to a dark brown finish. The blade is a narrow triangular shape with a tip that passes through the handle and curves upwards to a point on the other side of the handle. The blade has an engraved zigzag design along its length on both faces and has a sharpened and slightly curved edge.
