BowIe303

A very long plain dark bow without string. The bow has a flattened oval appearance with one flat side in cross section (one side flat, one side convex.), tapering from the centre to the ends. There is a raised ridge around the bow at both ends. One end has a cassowary claw, which is now broken. The opposite has two woven sleeves, probably rattan, each 1 cm. wide. The flat side of the bow is coated with thick resinous substance, now flaking off.

Bull FigureNi49

Roughly shaped bull figure with triangular head and inset blue glass bead eyes. Straight circular horns above eyes. Ear on left is behind and at side of horn, while ear on right is above and behind horn. Four straight legs, with rear leg on right shorter than others. Short downward pointing tail. Red crayon band around neck and on hind quarters with blue crayon band around mid-section and on horns.

Beautiful WomanNb11.298

White woman mask has light orange-brown hair interspersed with black, hair inserted into twenty-six holes along upper rim, affixed with glue and wooden pegs. Slightly curved forehead. Light red arched raised brows. Circular hollow eyes. Brown eyelid line extends from above the brow on the temple, around the eye, and curves downward on to the cheek ridge. Aquiline nose. Slightly rounded cheek area has faint pink hue, as does the under-brow. Carved ears. Patchy pink lip band while the lower lip protrudes slightly. Rounded chin. On the reverse, there are thirty-one holes in the upper rim. Two metal 'eyes' screwed in above eye level. Wire passes through 'eyes' and is twisted. Two cylindrical wooden pegs at the base of the ears. Signed in pencil 'J. David '87'.

Round, stylized human face mask with sides sloping up to eyebrows and mouth. Mouth is curved slit with flattened lip. Thin almond shaped eye holes on slope below curved brow ridge. Triangular nose in high relief. Faint dark triangle on chin, bands below nose indicating a moustache, also eyebrows and hair. Small holes drilled on either side. Evenly spaced series of holes along edge of mask do not go through to back. Screwed in metal hook at top centre back. Back surface is rough with 'nesk-7-ex' in black and '2-11991' in white letters. White stain on face.

Roughly shaped human figure with straight arms at front sides. Legs are drawn up to torso with knees at hip level. Forelegs are straight and the feet are pointed. The chest is flat chest and the back and the bottom are rounded. There is a large bald head with oval ears, pencilled brows, an outline to inset the eyes and eyelashes. The black bead bordered on either side by a white bead forms each eye. There is a long straight nose, flat cheeks, an indented mouth, and a pointed chin. Red crayon on chest and arms, blue crayon on back. White, blue, yellow, and orange beads are strung together to form a necklace.

Brown bentwood oval box with lid (part b). Box is one piece, with bent sides with bevelled edges forming a flush side, sewn together with two parallel rows of baleen(?) and leather. Rectangular walrus tusk clasp between sewn rows with hooked appendage and six holes (or sets of holes), two form 'eyes' with hook as 'nose', attached through holes with leather strips. Two parallel grooves at top and bottom of sides. On opposite side is second walrus tusk rectangle with five sets of holes with leather strips attaching it to box. One top corner has wooden pegged (three) strip of wood; a longer damaged pegged (six) strip on end. Two holes on non-clasp side for attaching lid to box. Both are broken, remnants of one are on box, the other. Lid has a horizontal row on top of 7 beads with the central bead being light blue and the others being dark blue.

Stylized human figure which follows the form of a vertebral spine with a sawn heart-shaped face. The face has a notch at top centre, line across forehead, holes (part way through) for oval eyes, small circles for nostrils and a crescent at mouth. Sawn, rounded shoulders; deep channel indicating arms which sweep down at sides; body expands out into partially eroded, squared off centrum. Phalange (of spine) extends out from sawn area below figure at back. Back side of figure has channels along arms.

Flat bottomed canoe slopes upward at each end. Carved out interior has seat at one end. Decorations formed by pressing glass beads into beeswax. White and orange around rim of carved out interior. White, blue, and yellow cross at one end. The interior has a yellow, orange, white, and blue human figure at end opposite seat. Four animal figures at bottom (dog, coiled snake, insect, and lizard?).

Deeply carved humanoid mask has black stained cedar bark strips folded, wrapped and tied to u-shaped ear projections and to upper edge of brow ridge; beneath cedar bark, between ear projections, red scallop-like design; ears have a series of rounded forms with a triangular form at base; large arched brows; deeply inset blue eye areas with black and white circular hollow eyes; hooked nose has curled tip resting on upper lip; rounded flaring hollow nostrils; deeply inset blue area around open mouth with protruding red lip bands; curvilinear t shaped design on cheeks; black and red coil at side rims meld with black chin. On reverse, thin wire is wrapped around a screw at each side rim and a nail at centre top to form a hanging device; red and black paint around eyes, nose and mouth; signed at side on right 'cockle hunter (Bookwus)' Glenn Tallio Nuxhalk Nation Bella Coola B.C.'87.
