Figurine, BoneJan-57

Carved bone amulet in shape of bear. Locality: "Potlatch Site", Orcas Island, Wash. Remarks: Forms pair with WSM 2412.* Note: 1-2157 & 2412 are from 2 different accessions & form a pair only because they look similar. Also, this is probably a wolf not a bear because of the long tail over the back. RA. 8/2/1994. Email from L. Phillips to Dr. Charles Nelson regarding site location (see Accn. file). It is unclear whether the "Potlatch Site" is now called the Crescent Beach Shell Mound, 45-SJ-240. *Information comes from original accession ledger.

Carving, Stone1991-103/1

Small stone animal figure, carved from soft soapstone. Animal has carved ears with ear holes, eyes, nostrils, and open mouth. Body has bent forelimbs with feet, 6 ribs, backbone, and rudimentary hindlimbs which are cut off; the bottom of the sculpture is very flat (and might have been sawn). It was suggested by the donor that it had come from a ceremonial pipe.(?) Skeletal carving style (showing backbone and ribs) places it with other known stone sculpture from the same location (some dates to 1500 B.C.) RKW. Sculpture is scratched, nicked and gouged: Left ribcage, right ribcage, left shoulder and forearm, lower jaw. - S. Hood 3/21/2006 Fide donor: found by a family member on a farm on Avon Allen Road, 3 miles north of Burlington, WA prior to 1918 (ca. 1910).

Net Gauge, Bone5483

Bone net gauge for making fish net.* 6/30/94:gauge split in half, lengthwise, along diameter of hole in center. String (non-ethnographic) wound around both pieces was removed because (1) it was not curation-quality, and (2) it was putting the pieces in jeopardy by causing them to scrape against each other. Both pieces appear to have been glued together at some point (L.Phillps). Broken into two pieces, with one perforation. (6/95). *Information is from the original accession ledger.
