MaskAf338

Small mask with fine features and articulated jaw. Hair is in the form of a black crest. Two cone-shaped protrusions rise on either side of the crest; those in front are red, those in back are black. A long, raised scarification mark on the centre forehead ends between thin black eyebrows. Eyes are narrow slits. Small rounded ears are separated from eyes by two black raised disks with raised horizontal rectangles in between. Lips are painted black. Jaw is joined to upper section with bark(?) threaded through holes behind eyes and the top of the jaw. Perforations are made in hair crest, black cones and behind ears. Mask is patinated.

Maiden Spirit MaskAf337

Mmwo helmet mask. Carved from a single piece of wood, the mask depicts a female face with a large ornate coiffure. A circular crescent, around a concentric circular plaque, rests on top of the head. Portions of the crest and parts of the hair are painted purple, also inside the nostrils. Black scarification marks spiral on the cheeks and are crosshatched on the forehead and the temples. Four loops of scarification drop from black painted lips. Eyes are small and narrow. Eyebrows have curly black hair glued on. A neckpiece of yellow, red, black, and white felt with purple and natural cotton is attached to the back by metal hooks.

The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. Pink face positioned forward: slightly curved nose, closed dark pink lips. Hair, eyebrows, moustache, facial details and eyes outlined in black. Black upswept curl (gelung supit urang) headdress with red flower motif (7 petals) at front, lungsen surrounding grey area, long gold sumping extending below curl with red bottom, flower beneath ear and green decoration. Single kendit. Gold neck and upper body; red and gold ornaments at bicep and wrist on each arm. Hands held flat and bent back at wrist. Red chest covering and apron with brown wavy trim, sequins and beads. Apron has red waistband, '+' pattern in beads, and yellow fringe at bottom. Long beige skirt with blue and red.

Green face, positioned downwards, with exaggerated features: wedge shaped nose, bulging white eyes with red irises, wide red lips and white teeth. Moustache, small beard, hair, and other facial details in black. Tear-drop shaped decoration on both cheeks. Wound head cloth with diadem in red, green, and gold. Gold badong at rear with green Garuda Mungkur (short tongue) with grey base and red and gold sumping. Five curls of black hair extend from headdress at rear. Gold neck and torso, muscular but not corpulent. Arms have red and gold ornaments at wrists and biceps. Hands held flat and bent back at wrist. Red chest covering and apron with brown wavy trim, sequins, and bead decoration. Apron has red waistband, long yellow fringe at bottom. Long batik skirt, beige with blue and red.

Deer bone pick which is long and narrow, tapered to a pointed tip. Small carved quetzal bird, in profile at top, has incised comb on head and incised eye, both painted light red. Faint green lines probably indicate tail feathers. Rest of pick is natural bone.

Conventional sekar kluwih headdress, in red, gold, and green. Neck and upper torso gold; red and gold ornaments on each arm at bicep and wrist. Hands held flat and bent back at wrist. Red chest covering and apron with blue and green sequins with bead centres, and brown outline sewn on. Apron has stained yellow fringe. Batik skirt (blue, purple on beige).

Gold neck and broad upper body; each arm has gold and red ornaments at bicep and wrist. Hands held flat and bent back at wrist. Red chest covering (only) with brown wavy trim, sequins and beads. Slight discolouration at collar. Long batik skirt with blue and purple detail.

Arms with green and red ornaments at bicep and wrist. Hands held flat and bent at wrist. Small black chest covering with wavy brown trim, and red apron with brown trim and yellow frills at bottom. Both the chest covering and apron have pink bead and green sequin detail. Long batik skirt in blue, beige, and brown.

Wooden rattle has hawk face design with recurved beak, blue chin, blue around eyes, and red ears. The reverse has an abstract design in black and red. Consists of two equal longitudinal sections, upper part of each hollowed out to form a closed cavity when the two halves are joined. Short plain handle. The sections are slightly warped.
